You have 4 ways to get data abroad from the UAE: a roaming pack on your e&, du or Virgin Mobile UAE line, a local SIM, a pocket WiFi or a data eSIM. Your UAE line won’t use mobile data abroad until you add a pack (15 Oct 2026), so pick one of the four before you fly. We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here. eSIM Go is not affiliated with e&, du or Virgin Mobile UAE.
Four ways to get data abroad
A pack and an eSIM are set up at home, while a local SIM usually waits for a shop or branch after you land (local SIM or eSIM). The table compares all four as of 15 Oct 2026.
| Way | Where you get it | UAE number | Weak point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Operator pack | Operator app, before you fly | Stays on | No data until you buy a pack |
| Local SIM | Shop or branch abroad | New number | ID and registration |
| Pocket WiFi | Rented or bought, separate device | Phone keeps its UAE SIM | One more battery |
| Data eSIM | Online, before you fly | UAE SIM stays for calls and SMS | Data only; phone must support eSIM |

Operator pack. e& unlocks pay-as-you-go data for 24 hours if you send “UBLOCK” to 1010, then blocks it again. du has no pay-as-you-go data, and Virgin Mobile UAE says “There’s no Pay As You Go rates available”.
Local SIM. stc in Saudi Arabia says “you must visit the branch upon arrival to activate the number” (stc Sawa Visitor). A new Philippine SIM “shall only be activated after the end-user completes the process of registration” (RA 11934). A new Pakistani SIM needs a CNIC and fingerprints (PTA). Check the rules for your country in its guide (Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt, the Philippines, Pakistan) before you count on a SIM at the airport.
Pocket WiFi. A pocket WiFi (also sold as MiFi, portable WiFi or a travel router) is a second device with its own battery and SIM. For eSIM vs pocket WiFi, count the phones. Three phones at our social-media-and-photos profile of 0.8GB a day need 2.4GB a day, so a shared router needs 16.8GB for 7 days; separate eSIMs need about 5.6GB each (our arithmetic, an estimate; see how much data you need). Hotspot use from a phone counts against that phone’s plan data too. We have no sourced rental prices, so price the router’s week against three eSIMs before you book.
Data eSIM. Our single-country eSIMs for India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Nepal, Saudi Arabia and Oman are data-only, with no phone number, so your UAE SIM stays on for calls and SMS. Install before you fly; it connects when you land. They do not provide service in the UAE. Check your phone first.
Which guide to read first
On Virgin Mobile UAE, check One Country first: it uses your plan’s data in one country for free on plans of 20GB and up. Virgin’s page lists 34 countries, including India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the UK, but not Bangladesh, Nepal or Sri Lanka (15 Oct 2026). The pass does not renew itself: “Don’t forget to re-activate every month.”
On e& or du, go straight to your country’s guide. Each one compares a local SIM, your operator’s packs and a data eSIM for that country, with dated prices. If you still hold a SIM from home, the India guide and the Nepal guide cover keeping it. No guide for your country? Browse all countries or compare operators on roaming.
Gulf and Umrah trips
The e& GCC pack costs AED 100.00 for 5GB and 3 days; du’s 3-day GCC bundle costs AED 99.00 (5GB prepaid, 10GB postpaid; 15 Oct 2026). Virgin One Country covers Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar and Kuwait, but not Bahrain. Gulf roaming compares them with an eSIM.
The du Umrah pack costs AED 150.00 for 7 days, 10GB and 1000 minutes, and du says “Immediate activation upon purchase”, so buy it on the day you travel. e&’s postpaid Umrah pack costs AED 150.00 for 7 days, 15GB and 650 minutes (15 Oct 2026). If you need lots of calls home, your e& or du Umrah pack is hard to beat. For mostly data, or a stay longer than a week, see Umrah roaming.
