Roaming or eSIM: which is cheaper from the UAE

For a week with 5.6 GB, an eSIM costs less than every e&, du and Virgin Mobile pack in 112 of 176 destinations (operator prices checked on 15 Oct 2026). In 61 the answer depends on your operator and line, or the prices are about the same. A roaming pack costs less in Central African Republic, Ethiopia and Zimbabwe.

In the Gulf your e& or du roaming pack can be as cheap as an eSIM, and Virgin Mobile plans from 20 GB include one country free. An eSIM wins on short trips, on prepaid lines and against 10-day GCC packs. Virgin Mobile’s One Country roaming is free on its plans of 20 GB or more, in one country a month from its list (34 countries on its page; 33 of them are in this table). If you need lots of calls home during Umrah, your e& or du Umrah pack is hard to beat. If you mostly need data, or stay longer than a week, an eSIM is cheaper.

At du it does: the same 10 GB for 7 days costs AED 200.00 on prepaid and AED 100.00 on postpaid. e& sells different weekly packs to prepaid and postpaid customers, and Virgin Mobile packs cost the same on every plan. The table shows the postpaid price wherever it is lower than prepaid.

Keep your UAE SIM switched on for SMS. e& and Virgin Mobile don’t charge for SMS you receive abroad; du doesn’t publish a price, so check with your operator. Calls you receive are charged per minute. The eSIM is data only and has no phone number.

Each trip assumes 0.8 GB of data a day. For each operator we take the lowest-priced set of packs that covers the trip, prepaid and postpaid separately, at the AED price the operator publishes. For the eSIM we take our own AED price of the day, the amount your card is charged. “eSIM is cheaper” means every pack costs at least 1.2 times the eSIM; between 0.9 and 1.2 times we call it about the same price.
