International roaming from the UAE: e&, du, Virgin Mobile or an eSIM

World map with dashed arcs leaving the Gulf, smartphone in the foreground

International roaming keeps your UAE number working on a foreign network, but mobile data needs a roaming pack. A day pack is AED 35.00 at Etisalat (e&), du and Virgin Mobile UAE. The same du 10GB week costs AED 200.00 on prepaid and AED 100.00 on postpaid (operator pages, 15 Oct 2026). A data-only eSIM is the other tool, and the calculator below prices it for your trip.

We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here. The calculator and the operator pages below show when your operator pack is the better choice. eSIM Go is not affiliated with e&, du or Virgin Mobile UAE. Pack details are taken from their own pages on the date shown.

  • Day — AED 35.00: 500MB at e& and du, 750MB at Virgin Mobile
  • Prepaid week — AED 100.00 at all three; the GB differ
  • No pack — mobile data abroad is blocked on all three
  • Virgin Mobile One Country — free for a calendar month on plans of 20GB or more

Data roaming: what it is and when to switch it on or off

Data roaming is your phone using mobile data on a foreign network. On a dual SIM phone, turn data roaming off on your UAE line and on for the eSIM line. Your e&, du or Virgin Mobile line won’t use mobile data abroad unless you add a roaming pack (e& lets you unlock pay-as-you-go data for 24 hours by SMS). e& says data without a pack “is blocked for your protection from excessive charges”, so the block itself stops bill shock.

On an iPhone with two lines, Apple’s UAE guide says to “tap the number you want to modify, then tap Cellular Data Options”. Data Roaming is set there, line by line (Apple, 15 Oct 2026). On r/dubai, 16 Jul 2024, a postpaid du user reported roaming charges of “per day aed 1 … for some random bytes data consumption” after switching to a local data SIM. That is one person’s experience. Glossary: data roaming.

Prepaid or postpaid: why the same week costs different amounts

du sells one 10GB, 7-day bundle for AED 200.00 on prepaid and AED 100.00 on postpaid (du, 15 Oct 2026). du’s pages give no reason for the gap, so check your line type before you compare prices. e& has no data-only weekly pack for postpaid; prepaid Weekly Data is AED 100.00 for 4GB until 10 Jan 2027 (e&, 15 Oct 2026). Virgin Mobile UAE lists one price, AED 100.00 for a 2GB week, with no prepaid or postpaid split (Virgin Mobile, 15 Oct 2026).

Seven AED 35.00 day packs cost AED 245.00 for 3.5GB at e& or du (our arithmetic), more than double a prepaid week.

Roaming routes the phone back through the home network; a travel eSIM connects to a local network
With roaming your UAE operator carries your line abroad; a travel eSIM is a separate data plan you add before the trip

Roaming pack vs eSIM calculator

e& roaming pack, on your bill AED 200.00 2 × Roaming Weekly Data Pack · 7 days · 4 GB · prepaid only Price as published by e& (checked on 15 Oct 2026; promo until 10 Jan 2027). Most e& packs carry promo data until 10 Jan 2027, and we count the promo amounts (the weekly data pack is normally 2 GB, now 4 GB). Packs work only on e&’s preferred partner networks; e&’s two partner lists disagree on Armenia, so we don’t count e& there. Without a pack, e& keeps roaming data blocked. Homebound packs are for customers leaving the UAE for good (the number is disconnected after 30 or 60 days), so we don’t count them for a trip.
Travel eSIM, data only AED 46.99 5 GB · 30 days Your card is charged exactly AED 46.99; the charge is in UAE dirhams. The seller is registered outside the UAE, so some banks may still add a foreign-merchant fee.

With the eSIM you pay about AED 153.01 less.

Roaming vs eSIM for a 7-day trip, six examples. International roaming is priced per zone, so the AED 100.00 prepaid week is the same in every row; our price changes by country. A local SIM is the third option, and our SIM card guides by country cover it.

Your operator, the Gulf and Umrah

For packs, prices and activation, open e& roaming packs, du roaming bundles or Virgin Mobile roaming packs. For GCC roaming: in the Gulf your e& or du roaming pack can be as cheap as an eSIM — and Virgin Mobile plans from 20GB include one country free. An eSIM wins on short trips, prepaid lines and 10-day unlimited.

If you need lots of calls home during Umrah, your e& or du Umrah pack is hard to beat (Umrah and Hajj roaming). The eSIMs in the table are data-only, so keep your UAE number on your main SIM for calls and SMS. Method: how we compare.

Before you fly

  • UAE line — no pack means no mobile data abroad; with an eSIM, leave data roaming off on the UAE line.
  • When the days start — e& weekly packs are “Charged upon purchase but validity starts upon first eligible usage”. For du, buy shortly before you fly and check the activation note in the du app.
  • Your UAE number — keep the UAE SIM switched on; calls you receive are charged per minute (prices in the FAQ).
  • The eSIM — for UAE residents travelling abroad. Install before you fly; it connects when you land in your destination. Our eSIMs are for use outside the UAE; they do not provide service in the UAE.

FAQ

Should I turn data roaming on or off?

Data roaming lets your phone use mobile data on a foreign network. With two SIMs, turn it off on your UAE line and on for the eSIM line. Without a roaming pack, your e&, du or Virgin Mobile line won’t use mobile data abroad.

How do I activate international roaming on e&, du or Virgin Mobile UAE?

Buy a roaming pack in your operator’s app: My Etisalat UAE, the du app or the Virgin Mobile app. e& also sells packs by *177# (free in the UAE and abroad) or SMS to 1010. du data-only bundles can be bought up to 60 days before you travel; Virgin Mobile packs can be bought in the UAE or abroad.

Will I be charged for incoming calls and SMS while roaming?

Calls you receive cost per minute: e& AED 0.808 in the GCC and AED 4.25 elsewhere, du AED 0.81 in the GCC, Virgin Mobile AED 4.00 in the UK and India (15 Oct 2026). Keep your UAE SIM switched on for SMS; e& and Virgin Mobile don’t charge for SMS you receive abroad. du doesn’t publish a price for SMS you receive abroad — check with du.

Is a roaming pack or a travel eSIM better for 7, 15 or 30 days?

It depends on your line and country. A du 10GB week is AED 100.00 postpaid and AED 200.00 prepaid. e& prepaid Weekly Data is AED 100.00 for 4GB until 10 Jan 2027 (15 Oct 2026). Virgin Mobile plans of 20GB or more get one country from Virgin Mobile’s list free of charge for a calendar month. The calculator on this page compares your pack with our live eSIM price for 7, 15 or 30 days.
