Philippines SIM card for OFWs: Globe, Smart, roaming or a data eSIM
Virgin Mobile UAE customers on plans of 20GB and up can pick the Philippines as their One Country pass and use their plan’s data there for a month, free of charge. Without it, a month of roaming costs AED 300.00 (Virgin 20GB, 30 days), AED 350.00 (e& Economy, 6GB) or AED 500.00 for 60 days (du 30GB). A data-only eSIM, the alternative to a SIM card in the Philippines bought on arrival, starts at AED 14.99 for 1GB and 7 days; a new Philippine SIM works only after registration.

The Philippine Statistics Authority’s Survey on Overseas Filipinos 2024, via Gulf News, counts 271,000 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in the UAE: 12.4% of 2.19 million worldwide, second only to Saudi Arabia. OFWs are not every Filipino living in the UAE. We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here.
Four ways to stay connected on a trip home to the Philippines
You can keep using a Philippine SIM you already hold, register a new Globe or Smart SIM, add a roaming pack to your UAE line, or install a data eSIM. Only the new local SIM needs registration on arrival. Only Virgin One Country is free, and only on Virgin plans of 20GB and up.
| Option | Price | What you need | Weak point |
|---|---|---|---|
| e& (Etisalat), du or Virgin Mobile roaming pack | AED 35.00 to AED 1,200.00 a pack from about AED 15.00 per GB | Roaming switched on and a pack bought before you fly | Costs more per GB than the eSIM |
| Pocket Wi-Fi router | Not verified | Collect it, keep it charged and return it | One connection for the group, only while you stay together |
| Local SIM bought on arrival | Not verified | A free SIM slot and a shop after landing | On a one-slot phone it replaces your UAE SIM |
| Travel eSIM from this site | from AED 14.99 by card; from AED 4.45 per GB | An eSIM phone that is not locked to one operator | Data only: no calls or SMS on your UAE number |
Pack prices as listed by e&, du and Virgin Mobile on 15 Oct 2026; AED per GB is our derivation (price ÷ GB). eSIM prices are in AED at the day’s rate: your card is charged exactly that amount.
Your e&, du or Virgin Mobile line won’t use mobile data abroad unless you add a roaming pack (e& lets you unlock pay-as-you-go data for 24 hours by SMS). Virgin’s One Country list includes the Philippines (34 countries on the page, 15 Oct 2026); the pass does not renew itself: “Don’t forget to re-activate every month.” See Virgin One Country.
An eSIM goes on before you fly and connects when you land in the Philippines. A r/Philippines_Expats user wrote on 18 Apr 2025: “none of the airport wifi networks worked for me.” That is one person’s experience.
eSIM for the Philippines: most chosen plans
Your card is charged exactly AED 14.99; the charge is in UAE dirhams. The seller is registered outside the UAE, so some banks may still add a foreign-merchant fee — how card payment works.
What it costs per day
Plan price in AED ÷ days, at the rate of 16 Oct. A longer plan usually costs less per day: pick by your trip length, not by the lowest daily price.
Globe or Smart SIM on arrival: registration comes first
A new SIM card in the Philippines does nothing until you register it. Republic Act 11934, signed on 10 Oct 2022, says SIMs sold by operators and resellers “shall be in a deactivated state. It shall only be activated after the end-user completes the process of registration” (Official Gazette text, read 15 Oct 2026). An airport SIM is no exception: the rule covers SIMs sold by operators, their agents and resellers.
Registration is an electronic form plus a valid government-issued photo ID, such as a “Passport” or “Philippine Identification”. Foreign tourists give a passport, proof of address in the Philippines and a return ticket, and their SIM “shall only be valid temporarily for thirty (30) days”. We found no separate OFW rule in the law.
A balikbayan (a Filipino visiting home) wrote on r/Philippines (5 Jan 2023) after trying Globe’s form with US nationality: “I guess we would need to register under the tourist type which means it will only be valid for 30 days.” That is one person’s experience, from January 2023.
We could not open the Globe or Smart registration pages, so we give no portal steps and no local prices: register the SIM on its operator’s registration page and read the rules there before you fly. DITO is a third Philippine operator; we have no data on it. If your Philippine number is tied to a bank or e-wallet, ask them how they send codes before the trip; we cannot promise that SMS codes reach a number abroad.

e&, du and Virgin Mobile packs for the Philippines
For UAE roaming, the Philippines sits in the main zone of e&, du and Virgin Mobile UAE: a day costs AED 35.00 and a week AED 100.00 on e& and Virgin. The cheapest per GB in the table is du’s postpaid 10GB week: AED 100.00, or AED 10.00 per GB.
| Pack | Data · days | AED | AED per GB |
|---|---|---|---|
| e& Daily Data | 500MB · 1 day | 35 | 70 |
| Virgin daily pack | 750MB · 1 day | 35 | 46.7 |
| e& Weekly Data Pack (prepaid) | 4GB · 7 days (until 10 Jan 2027, normally 2GB) | 100 | 25 |
| Virgin weekly pack | 2GB · 7 days | 100 | 50 |
| du bundle, postpaid | 10GB · 7 days | 100 | 10 |
| du bundle, prepaid | 10GB · 7 days | 200 | 20 |
Sources: e& (15 Oct 2026); du postpaid and prepaid (15 Oct 2026); Virgin (15 Oct 2026). The per-GB column is our arithmetic. eSIM Go is not affiliated with e&, du, Virgin Mobile UAE, Globe or Smart.
Name your line type when you compare: a prepaid du week costs twice a postpaid one. Even du postpaid’s AED 100.00 week costs more than our Philippines eSIM with 10GB for 30 days at AED 59.99. Virgin’s “validity will begin once the first call is received or made”. More: e& roaming, du roaming.
Our eSIM is data-only, so calls stay on your UAE line. A call you receive costs AED 4.25 a minute on e& and AED 1.25 on du postpaid; calling the UAE costs AED 9.50 and AED 9.00 (15 Oct 2026). SMS you receive are free on e& and Virgin; du publishes no price. Setup: keep your UAE number.
A week in the Philippines: roaming pack vs eSIM
2.8× cheaper than prepaid packs Free on Virgin Mobile 20 GB+ plans5.6 GB for 7 days (0.8 GB a day, social media and photos): the cheapest prepaid way to get it, and postpaid where it is lower.
On roaming your UAE number also takes calls and SMS; the eSIM is data only. Packs at the operator’s AED price, as listed on 15 Oct 2026; the eSIM at its AED price on 16 Oct, charged in AED by card. Work out your own trip.
A balikbayan month: data for the whole visit
A month at home is free on Virgin One Country, AED 300.00 for Virgin’s 20GB pack (AED 15.00 per GB), AED 350.00 for e& Economy with 6GB and 60 minutes, and AED 500.00 for du’s 30GB bundle, which runs 60 days (AED 16.70 per GB).
| Option | Data · days | AED | AED per day |
|---|---|---|---|
| Virgin One Country (plans of 20GB+) | your plan’s data · 1 month | 0 | 0 |
| Virgin 20GB pack | 20GB · 30 days | 300 | 10.0 |
| e& Economy Class Pack | 6GB (until 10 Jan 2027, normally 2GB) · 30 days | 350 | 11.7 |
| du long data bundle | 30GB · 60 days | 500 | 8.3 over 60 days |
| Our Philippines eSIM | 20GB · 30 days | AED 88.99 | AED 2.97 |
| Our Philippines eSIM | unlimited, full speed up to 3GB a day, then 1 Mbps · 30 days | AED 264.99 | AED 8.83 |
Operator prices as listed on 15 Oct 2026; per-day is our arithmetic. Charged in AED by JET SHARING (USA). Your bank may add a foreign-transaction fee; see how to pay.
The rule: on a Virgin plan of 20GB or more, activate One Country; it beats any eSIM. If you still hold a registered Philippine SIM with load, keep using it. Everyone else should size the month first, then set the 20GB eSIM row against AED 300.00, 350 and 500.
At our daily profiles (estimates, not measurements), social media and photos use 0.8GB a day, so 20GB lasts about 25 days; video and video calls use 1.7GB a day, so it lasts about 11. Daily video calls home point to unlimited, which keeps full speed up to 3GB a day, then 1 Mbps. Size it in how much data do I need.
Pocket Wi-Fi or eSIM
A pocket Wi-Fi is a separate router with its own battery and SIM; an eSIM lives in the phone you already carry. The router suits several phones on one connection; the eSIM suits phones that each take one.
Take a family of four on social media and photos: 4 × 0.8GB = 3.2GB a day, 44.8GB over 14 days (our arithmetic). On an unlimited plan, one phone sharing that load by hotspot passes the 3GB a day point where speed drops to 1 Mbps. Hotspot use counts against your plan’s data, and we have not confirmed that every plan allows it, so ask support first. We quote no router prices.
Networks: Smart on our eSIM, Globe through the Asia plan
Our Philippines eSIM runs on Smart, 5G (our catalogue, 15 Oct 2026), in sizes of 1 to 20GB for 7 to 30 days, plus unlimited for 3 to 30 days. Globe appears only in the regional Asia plan, alongside Smart (our catalogue, 15 Oct 2026). See the Philippines eSIM plans and the Asia eSIM plans.
We have no coverage data to rank Globe against Smart, and the better one depends on your town or province. Ask the relative you are staying with which one holds a signal inside the house, and compare it with the plan page that day. 5G needs Smart 5G coverage and a 5G phone. We promise no network, coverage or speed. If the eSIM has not connected to any network, you can get a refund within 30 days of purchase.
Check before you fly
What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in the Philippines?
Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.
The first is the line for mobile data. On iPhone it is Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data; on Android, the SIM manager. Pick the travel line there; your UAE line stays on for calls and SMS, with its mobile data off.
The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats the Philippines as roaming for it.
The third is the APN. On this plan it sets itself, so leave it alone; you don’t need to type one.
The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch airplane mode on and off, and let it find Smart; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.
Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimgo.ae with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.
What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)
For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, AED 14.99. For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, AED 40.99. If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, AED 85.99, with 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.
I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If you need calls or SMS on your UAE number every day, roaming on your e&, du or Virgin Mobile line keeps them, and some packs include minutes (compare the packs). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.
FAQ
Do I need to register a SIM card in the Philippines as an OFW?
Yes, every new Philippine SIM must be registered before it works (Republic Act 11934, signed 10 Oct 2022). The law asks for a government-issued photo ID, such as a passport. We found no separate OFW rule, so check Globe’s or Smart’s registration rules before you fly.
Is Globe or Smart better in the Philippines?
We have no coverage data to rank them. Our Philippines eSIM runs on Smart; Globe appears only in the regional Asia plan. Ask your family which network holds a signal in your town, then compare it with the plan page on the day you buy.
SIM card in the Philippines or eSIM for a month at home?
Virgin One Country is free on Virgin plans of 20GB and up. Otherwise a month of UAE roaming costs AED 300.00 (Virgin 20GB), AED 350.00 (e& Economy, 6GB) or AED 500.00 for 60 days (du 30GB), as listed on 15 Oct 2026. A new Globe or Smart SIM works only after registration; a data eSIM installs before you fly and connects when you land in the Philippines.
