Roaming and eSIM glossary for UAE residents travelling abroad
The roaming meaning is short: your phone uses a mobile network that is not your home network. Without a pack, e&, du and Virgin Mobile block mobile data there. Operator terms carry their conditions and prices as read on 15 Oct 2026.
We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here. eSIM Go is not affiliated with e&, du or Virgin Mobile UAE.
Roaming and operator terms
Roaming meaning in practice: your UAE number keeps working on a foreign network, but mobile data needs a pack, such as e&’s day pack at AED 35.00 for 500MB (15 Oct 2026). The table puts the operator packs defined below side by side, each with the date its price was read.
| Term | Operator | Condition | Pack |

| Roam Like Home | e& (15 Oct 2026) | Freedom plans only | Weekly Data AED 100.00, 7 days, your plan’s data |
| Roam Like Home | du (15 Oct 2026) | Prepaid Flexi plans only | Data AED 99.00, 7 days, your plan’s data |
| One Country | Virgin Mobile (15 Oct 2026) | Plans of 20GB or more | free, one calendar month, one country |
| GCC pack | e& (15 Oct 2026) | Five GCC countries | AED 100.00, 3 days, 5GB |

Roaming
What is roaming? The roaming meaning is using your phone on a network other than your home operator’s. Abroad your phone joins a visited network, and roaming charges apply. Roaming from the UAE compares e&, du and Virgin Mobile.
Data roaming
Data roaming is the narrower roaming meaning, the phone setting that lets a line use mobile data on a visited network. On roaming vs mobile data: mobile data is the internet connection itself, and roaming tells you whose network carries it. On an iPhone it sits under Cellular Data Options, set per line (Apple Support UAE). Turn it on for the travel eSIM and off for your UAE line.
Prepaid, postpaid
Prepaid means you pay in advance; postpaid means the operator bills you monthly. Packs differ by line: du sells one 10GB, 7-day bundle at AED 200.00 prepaid and AED 100.00 postpaid, and e& has no data-only weekly pack for postpaid, only the Weekly Combo at AED 250.00 (du and e&, 15 Oct 2026).
Roam Like Home
Roam Like Home is an e& and du pack that spends your own plan’s data abroad. e& states: “Roam like Home is available only to Freedom Plan customers”, with fair use of 25GB a week, then 128 Kbps. du limits it to prepaid Flexi plans. See Etisalat roaming.
One Country
One Country Data Roaming is Virgin Mobile UAE’s free pass for one calendar month in one country from Virgin’s list (34 countries on the page, 15 Oct 2026), on plans of 20GB or more. It does not auto-renew; re-activate it in the app monthly. See Virgin Mobile roaming.
GCC pack
A GCC pack works only in Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain. See Gulf roaming.
Umrah pack
An Umrah pack works in Saudi Arabia only, and the e& and du Umrah packs in the table bundle minutes for calls home. The clocks differ: e&’s 7 days start at first use in Saudi Arabia, while du’s start at purchase. See Umrah roaming.
PAYG
PAYG (pay-as-you-go) is the per-minute, per-SMS or per-KB rate you pay without a pack. For data it barely exists: du has none, Virgin says “There’s no Pay As You Go rates available”, and e& opens it for 24 hours after you text UBLOCK to 1010, at about AED 33.00 per MB outside the Gulf on postpaid (our arithmetic from AED 1.00 per 30KB, 15 Oct 2026).
eSIM terms
An eSIM is a SIM built into the phone: you add a plan by scanning a QR code or typing an activation code instead of inserting a card. Our travel eSIMs are for use outside the UAE; they do not provide service in the UAE.
eSIM
The eSIM full form is embedded SIM, also called a digital SIM. The short eSIM definition is a chip built into the phone that stores plans as profiles you download, so no plastic card goes in. Apple lists eSIM on “iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, or later” (Apple Support UAE, 15 Oct 2026). The longer eSIM meaning, with how it works on a trip: what is an eSIM.
QR code
A QR code is the square image that carries the install instructions for an eSIM profile, the plan stored on your phone’s eSIM chip. Ours is in the order e-mail, sent once payment is confirmed. Steps: how to install an eSIM.
SM-DP+
SM-DP+ is the server that holds your eSIM profile, and its address is the first thing your phone needs to download it. The activation code is the second: it tells that server which profile is yours. The QR code carries both. If it does not scan, the Manual setup box on your order page lists the SM-DP+ address and the activation code, each with a copy button; paste them exactly as shown and stay on Wi-Fi until the download finishes.
EID
The EID (eUICC identifier) is the identification number of the eSIM chip inside your phone. Plans come and go; the EID belongs to the chip. A phone without an eSIM chip has no EID. Our install steps never ask for it.
Plan and data terms
Unlimited on a travel eSIM means full speed up to a daily limit, which on most of our single-country unlimited plans is 3GB a day, then 1 Mbps. On most of our plans, validity starts at your first connection abroad, not at purchase.
Fair use
A fair-use limit is the amount after which a plan slows down instead of stopping. Most of our single-country unlimited plans drop to 1 Mbps after 3GB a day; Thailand, the USA, Italy and Spain allow 5GB a day first. Operators do the same: e& Daily Data slows to 64 kbps after 500MB (15 Oct 2026). See unlimited eSIM data.
Data-only
A data-only plan carries mobile data and nothing else: no calls, no SMS and no phone number. Our eSIMs for India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, the Philippines, Egypt, Sri Lanka and the five GCC countries are data-only; the UK and USA also have plans with minutes. Keep your UAE SIM on for SMS: e& and Virgin Mobile don’t charge for SMS you receive abroad, while calls you receive cost per minute.
Top-up
A top-up adds data to an eSIM you have already installed, instead of a new purchase and install. Our plans accept top-ups except the unlimited plans of Turkey, Qatar and Kyrgyzstan and some products for Afghanistan, Guam, Jersey, Morocco and Taiwan.
Validity
Validity is how many days a plan lasts. On most of our eSIMs the days count from the first connection in the destination. Install on a Monday, land the next Monday, and day 1 is the day you land. Some Bosnia and Herzegovina, Suriname and Mayotte products start at install. Operators differ: e& Weekly and Monthly packs have “validity starts upon first eligible usage”, while du voice and data bundles are “activated immediately” at purchase (e& and du, 15 Oct 2026).
Phone and line terms
With a UAE SIM and a travel eSIM your phone runs two lines: the UAE SIM stays primary for calls and SMS, and the eSIM is the data line with Data Roaming on.
Dual SIM
Dual SIM means two active lines in one phone. Your primary line is the UAE SIM; the data line is the eSIM, chosen under Cellular Data on an iPhone. On the iPhone 17, 17e and Air, which are eSIM-only (Apple UAE), your UAE line is an eSIM too. See keep your UAE number.
Hotspot
A hotspot shares your phone’s mobile data with another device. That use counts against your plan’s data, and on unlimited plans it counts towards the daily fair-use limit. Our plan details do not state whether every plan allows hotspot, so ask support before you count on it for a laptop.
APN
An APN (access point name) is the setting that tells your phone how to reach the mobile data network. Most of our plans set it automatically. An iPhone needs a manual APN only for Colombia, Panama and Venezuela; Android needs one on some plans, including Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Turkey, the USA and Nepal. Where to enter it: eSIM APN settings.
