What is an eSIM? A plain guide for UAE residents travelling abroad

What is an eSIM? It is a SIM built into your phone: you download a mobile plan to it instead of inserting a plastic card. For a trip abroad from the UAE, a travel eSIM adds mobile data while your e&, du or Virgin Mobile SIM stays in the phone for calls and SMS. Our single-country eSIMs for India, Pakistan and the GCC countries are data-only, with no phone number (15 Oct 2026).

eSIM meaning: a SIM profile your phone downloads

eSIM means embedded SIM, the eSIM full form: a chip inside the phone that stores a mobile plan as a downloadable profile. That is how eSIM works: you add the profile with a QR code or an activation code, and the phone connects to a network the way it does with a plastic SIM. It works only on phones built with eSIM. One phone can hold your e& or du line and a travel eSIM side by side, as two separate profiles.

“eSIM card”, “digital SIM” and “e-SIM” name the same thing; there is no card to hold. The glossary gives the eSIM definition next to related terms such as EID and SM-DP+. Apple lists eSIM on “iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, or later”, and Samsung warns “Depending on the country of origin, eSIM may not be supported even if your device is listed above.” (Apple Support UAE and Samsung UAE, 15 Oct 2026) Check your model in the eSIM-compatible phones list.

How a travel eSIM works: buy, install, connect on landing

A travel eSIM is a data plan for one country, bought online and installed before you fly. It connects when you land. On almost every plan, its days start at your first connection abroad, not at purchase or install, and we run no ID or KYC check (15 Oct 2026).

Without a roaming pack or an eSIM, your phone gets no mobile data abroad: e&, du and Virgin Mobile block it unless you add a roaming pack, and e& lets you unlock pay-as-you-go data for 24 hours by texting UBLOCK to 1010 (e&, 15 Oct 2026).

Buy the plan, scan the QR code on home Wi-Fi, set the eSIM as the mobile data line, and keep the UAE SIM for calls and SMS. Steps per phone: install guide. Example: you install a 7-day plan on a Monday and land in Muscat the next Monday. The 7 days run from that landing, so the week before the flight costs you no days. Some plans for Bosnia and Herzegovina, Suriname and Mayotte start at install instead, so read the country page. If the eSIM has not connected to any network, you can get a refund within 30 days of purchase.

The eSIM on your e& or du line vs a travel eSIM

An eSIM on your own e& line carries your UAE number; a travel eSIM is a second profile that adds data in the country you visit. On its eSIM page e& answers “Can I request an eSIM while roaming?” with “No, you will need to be in the UAE to request an eSim” (15 Oct 2026). A travel eSIM leaves your e& line as it is.

We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here. eSIM Go is not affiliated with e&, du or Virgin Mobile UAE. Roaming can win: if you need lots of calls home during Umrah, your e& or du Umrah pack is hard to beat. The roaming guide compares the packs, du’s Travel eSIM store lists its own plans, and the eSIM vs SIM card page covers local SIMs.

What a data eSIM doesn’t do: no number, no calls

Our single-country eSIMs for India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, the Philippines, Egypt, Sri Lanka, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain are data-only: no calls, no SMS, no phone number (15 Oct 2026). Your UAE number stays on your main SIM; to keep your number reachable, leave that SIM in the phone.

e& lists incoming SMS abroad as “Incoming SMS Free” and Virgin Mobile as “Receive AED 0.00”; we found no du price for it. e& charges AED 0.808 a minute for calls you receive in the GCC and AED 4.25 elsewhere (15 Oct 2026). No operator page we read promises that bank OTP SMS will arrive abroad, so keep the UAE SIM switched on. See keep your UAE number for the dual SIM settings.

Limits and disadvantages

A travel eSIM has four limits: your phone must support eSIM, most unlimited plans slow to 1 Mbps after 3GB a day, some countries have no unlimited plan, and it does not work at home. Our eSIMs “are for use outside the UAE; they do not provide service in the UAE.”

On unlimited plans the full-speed limit is 3GB a day in most countries and 5GB in Thailand, the USA, Italy and Spain (15 Oct 2026). Sri Lanka and the Maldives have no unlimited plan, Egypt has unlimited for 3, 5 and 10 days only, and Nepal’s stops at 10 days. For a month in Nepal, Sri Lanka or Egypt, buy two packs or top up.

Phones set limits too. Samsung says “Only one eSIM can be active at a time on most Samsung Galaxy devices” (Samsung UAE, 15 Oct 2026). The iPhone 17, 17e and Air are “not compatible with physical SIM cards” (Apple UAE, 15 Oct 2026), so your UAE line is an eSIM too. One r/DubaiGaming commenter (22 Sep 2025) wrote: “Upgrading to an esim only model will force me to ask my company for permission to upgrade the business number to esim, which I’m sure they wont allow.” That is one person’s experience. Don’t delete the travel eSIM before your trip ends; turn the line off instead, and contact support before you reinstall or move it.

FAQ

What does eSIM mean?

eSIM means embedded SIM: a chip inside the phone that stores a mobile plan as a profile. You add the plan with a QR code or an activation code instead of a plastic card.

Do you keep your phone number with an eSIM?

Yes. A data-only travel eSIM adds data, not a number, so your UAE number and the WhatsApp account on it stay as they are. Keep the UAE SIM switched on for calls and SMS. Calling apps are subject to the rules of the country you are in.

Do I turn off roaming when using an eSIM?

On the eSIM line, turn on Data Roaming and choose it as the mobile data line; Apple Support UAE shows both settings (15 Oct 2026). On the UAE line, keep data roaming off and leave the line switched on for calls and SMS.

Can I have multiple eSIMs?

Yes, on many phones. The iPhone 13 and later support two active eSIMs; most Samsung Galaxy phones keep one active at a time.
