iPhone eSIM for UAE residents: which models work and UAE versions
Apple’s list for iPhone e SIM support reads “iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, or later”, and the iPhone 17, 17e and Air sold in the UAE take no physical SIM at all. The table below copies Apple’s UAE pages with the date we read them, 15 Oct 2026. For a trip you need two lines: your UAE SIM for calls and SMS, and a travel eSIM for data.
Which iPhones support eSIM
Apple’s UAE support page names eSIM on iPhone XS, XS Max, XR and later (published 17 Sep 2026, read 15 Oct 2026). The iPhone X and earlier are not on that list, so they have no eSIM.
| Model | eSIM | Physical SIM tray in the UAE model | Two eSIMs active at once |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17 | Yes | No: “not compatible with physical SIM cards” | Yes: “Dual eSIM” |
| iPhone 17e | Yes | No: “not compatible with physical SIM cards” | Yes: “Dual eSIM” |
| iPhone Air | Yes | No: “not compatible with physical SIM cards” | Yes: “Dual eSIM” |
| iPhone 16 | Yes | Yes: “Dual SIM (nano-SIM and eSIM)” | Yes: “Dual eSIM support” |
| iPhone 15 | Yes | Not confirmed | Yes |
| iPhone 13 | Yes | Not confirmed | Yes |
| iPhone 11 | Yes | Not confirmed | No: one eSIM plus a physical SIM |
Sources, read 15 Oct 2026: Apple Support UAE, set up eSIM and Dual SIM; Apple UAE tech specs for the iPhone 17, 17e, Air and 16. “Not confirmed”: Apple’s UAE tech-specs page for that model shows the US configuration, so the iPhone 15, 13 and 11 rows rest on Apple’s general list.
To check eSIM support on other models, see the eSIM compatible phones list. To install the travel eSIM on any of them, follow how to activate an eSIM on iPhone.
How many eSIMs an iPhone holds, and how many work at once
An iPhone keeps two active lines at a time and uses one of them for mobile data. Apple’s UAE spec for the iPhone 17, 17e and Air reads “Dual eSIM (two active eSIMs; stores eight or more eSIMs)”, and Apple’s Dual SIM page adds: “Your iPhone can use one cellular data network at a time.”
By model, the same page says: “You can use Dual SIM by using a physical SIM and an eSIM. iPhone 13 models and later also support Dual SIM with two eSIMs, in addition to a physical SIM and an eSIM.” What that means for your trip:
iPhone 17, 17e and Air: your UAE line is an eSIM, the travel eSIM is the second eSIM, and both are active.
iPhone 16: the UAE spec lists a nano-SIM and eSIM, so your UAE SIM can stay physical and the travel eSIM is the second line. An eSIM from your UAE operator works too.
iPhone 13 to iPhone 15: the travel eSIM runs next to a physical SIM or a second eSIM, so the form of your UAE line does not matter.
iPhone XS to iPhone 12: one eSIM next to one physical SIM. The travel eSIM takes that single eSIM slot, so your UAE line has to stay on the physical SIM. If your UAE number is already an eSIM on one of these models, only one of the two eSIMs can be on at a time.
Keep the UAE line switched on for calls and SMS: e& and Virgin Mobile don’t charge for SMS you receive abroad; du publishes no price for it, so check with du. Calls you receive are charged per minute: AED 4.25 on e& outside the GCC (operator pages, 15 Oct 2026). We cannot promise that bank OTP messages arrive abroad, and no operator page does either. Our eSIMs for India, Pakistan, the Philippines and the Gulf are data-only, with no phone number. See keep your UAE number abroad.

iPhones bought in the UAE, and locked iPhones
In the UAE, Apple sells the iPhone 17, 17e and Air as eSIM-only and the iPhone 16 with a nano-SIM tray. A carrier-locked iPhone is the other limit: Apple says that to use another carrier’s eSIM abroad, “your iPhone cannot be locked to a carrier.”
One user on r/UAE (11 Sep 2025) wrote: “Well I just saw all uae versions are now esim only.” That is one person’s reading, about the iPhone 17 Pro. We read no Apple UAE page for the 17 Pro or 17 Pro Max, so check the tech-specs page of your exact model at apple.com/ae before you buy.
Before an iPhone e SIM from another provider can work, check the lock in three taps: Settings, General, About. “No SIM Restrictions” next to Carrier Lock means the iPhone is unlocked (Apple Support UAE, 15 Oct 2026). If Carrier Lock shows anything else, ask your carrier first. Apple’s UAE iPhone 16 spec page adds that eSIM use “may be disabled when purchased from some carriers.” The locked phones section covers locked phones of every brand.
An iPhone bought outside the UAE follows the market it was made for: regional models differ, and Apple names two exceptions. In China mainland “only iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone 17e, and iPhone Air support eSIM”, so an iPhone 16 or 17 from there takes no travel eSIM. In Hong Kong and Macao, certain models “feature Dual SIM with two nano-SIM cards”.
FAQ
Which iPhones support eSIM?
Apple’s UAE support page lists eSIM on “iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, or later”, read on 15 Oct 2026. The iPhone X and earlier are not on that list, so they have no eSIM. Two eSIMs at once need an iPhone 13 or later.
How many eSIMs can an iPhone hold?
Apple’s UAE spec for the iPhone 17, 17e and Air says “stores eight or more eSIMs”, with two active at a time. From the iPhone 13, two eSIMs can be active at once; the iPhone XS to iPhone 12 run one eSIM next to a physical SIM.
Is the iPhone 17 sold in the UAE eSIM-only?
Yes. Apple’s UAE tech specs call the iPhone 17, 17e and Air “not compatible with physical SIM cards”. The iPhone 16 lists “Dual SIM (nano-SIM and eSIM)”. We read no Apple UAE page for the 17 Pro, so check yours.
Can I use a travel eSIM on an iPhone with my UAE SIM?
Yes, if the iPhone is not locked to a carrier. Keep the UAE line on for calls and SMS and use the travel eSIM for data. Incoming calls on the UAE line are charged per minute, and we cannot promise that bank OTP messages arrive abroad.
