India SIM card for NRIs from the UAE: local SIM, roaming or eSIM
On Virgin Mobile UAE plans of 20GB and up, the One Country pass lets you use your plan’s data in India for a month, free of charge. Without it, a month costs AED 300.00 (Virgin 20GB pack), AED 350.00 (e& Economy, 6GB until 10 Jan 2027) or AED 500.00 for 60 days (du 30GB). A data-only 4G eSIM for India costs AED 16.99 for 1 GB and 7 days.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs counts 4,326,248 NRIs (non-resident Indians) in the UAE in January 2026. Dubai International handled 11.9 million passengers to and from India in 2025, transit included, so that is not a count of residents’ trips (Dubai Media Office). This India SIM card guide is for UAE residents going home. We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here.
Four ways to get mobile data on a visit home to India
You have four options: your Indian SIM kept active, a new Indian prepaid SIM, a roaming pack on your UAE line, or a data eSIM. The one that costs nothing is Virgin Mobile UAE One Country, on plans of 20GB and up.
| Option | Price | What you need | Weak point |
|---|---|---|---|
| e& (Etisalat), du or Virgin Mobile roaming pack | AED 35.00 to AED 1,200.00 a pack from about AED 15.00 per GB | Roaming switched on and a pack bought before you fly | Costs more per GB than the eSIM |
| Pocket Wi-Fi router | Not verified | Collect it, keep it charged and return it | One connection for the group, only while you stay together |
| Local SIM bought on arrival | Not verified | A free SIM slot and a shop after landing | On a one-slot phone it replaces your UAE SIM |
| Travel eSIM from this site | from AED 16.99 by card; from AED 6.50 per GB | An eSIM phone that is not locked to one operator | Data only: no calls or SMS on your UAE number |
Pack prices as listed by e&, du and Virgin Mobile on 15 Oct 2026; AED per GB is our derivation (price ÷ GB). eSIM prices are in AED at the day’s rate: your card is charged exactly that amount.
Your e&, du or Virgin Mobile line won’t use mobile data abroad unless you add a roaming pack (e& lets you unlock pay-as-you-go data for 24 hours by SMS). India is on the One Country list (34 countries on Virgin’s page, 15 Oct 2026); the pass does not renew itself: “Don’t forget to re-activate every month.” See Virgin One Country.
eSIM for India: most chosen plans
Your card is charged exactly AED 16.99; the charge is in UAE dirhams. The seller is registered outside the UAE, so some banks may still add a foreign-merchant fee — how card payment works.
What it costs per day
Plan price in AED ÷ days, at the rate of 16 Oct. A longer plan usually costs less per day: pick by your trip length, not by the lowest daily price.
Your Indian SIM, a new local SIM or a data eSIM: what each one needs
Each India SIM card route has its own requirement. Your Indian SIM needs an active plan. A new Jio or
Airtel prepaid SIM needs Aadhaar KYC online and delivery in India. The data eSIM alternative needs a compatible phone and no ID check, and it connects when you land (installation steps).
One commenter on r/dubai (20 May 2025) wrote: “I usually use local SIM with data and only use roaming for voice.” That is one person’s experience.
A new Indian SIM. Jio’s page says “Complete Self KYC on your phone and get your SIM delivered at home for FREE”, asks you to “verify your Aadhaar”, and promises delivery “in 2–3 days” (jio.com, 15 Oct 2026). Airtel offers a prepaid SIM “in 3 easy steps”: pay, complete KYC, get it home delivered (airtel.in, 15 Oct 2026). Neither page lists documents for an NRI or OCI holder without Aadhaar, so ask at a Jio or Airtel store. We found no operator page that confirms an airport SIM counter.
Keep your Indian number active. Jio and Airtel sell international roaming (IR) packs that include the UAE. Prices are in INR as published.
| Pack | Validity | Data | Minutes | INR |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jio Gulf Pack | 7 days | 1GB | 100 out + 100 in | 898 |
| Jio Annual IR Plan | 365 days | 3GB | 100 | 2,799 |
| Airtel IR pack | 30 days | 10GB | 300 | 2,998 |
| Airtel IR pack | 365 days | 7GB | 100 | 4,999 |
Sources: Jio (15 Oct 2026); Airtel, terms PDF of 24 Sep 2026 read by OCR (15 Oct 2026). Both list more packs, and Airtel’s FAQ shows older prices, so confirm on the day you buy.
Jio says IR plan validity “begins only with your first usage” but does not say whether that holds for the Annual IR Plan; Airtel’s 365-day pack starts “from the date of recharge”. Airtel’s IR page says “Keep your existing number active”; Jio’s pages do not say what a pack does to your number’s own validity, so ask Jio before you rely on one. We do not cover how to port a number.

e&, du and Virgin Mobile packs for India: a week and a month
India is in the main roaming zone of e&, du and Virgin Mobile UAE: a day costs AED 35.00 on all three, and a week AED 100.00 (AED 200.00 on a du prepaid line). One commenter on r/dubai (20 May 2025) wrote: “You pay just AED 35.00 a day for the most basic package.” That is one person’s experience.
| Pack | Data · days | AED | about AED per GB |
|---|---|---|---|
| e& Daily Data | 500MB · 1 day | 35 | 70 |
| Virgin daily pack | 750MB · 1 day | 35 | 46.7 |
| e& Weekly Data Pack (prepaid) | 4GB · 7 days (until 10 Jan 2027, normally 2GB) | 100 | 25 |
| Virgin weekly pack | 2GB · 7 days | 100 | 50 |
| du bundle, postpaid | 10GB · 7 days | 100 | 10 |
| du bundle, prepaid | 10GB · 7 days | 200 | 20 |
Sources: e& (15 Oct 2026); du postpaid and prepaid (15 Oct 2026); Virgin (15 Oct 2026). The per-GB column is our arithmetic. eSIM Go is not affiliated with e&, du, Virgin Mobile UAE, Jio or Airtel.
e&’s weekly and monthly packs are “Charged upon purchase but validity starts upon first eligible usage”; Virgin’s “validity will begin once the first call is received or made”. du’s API and FAQ disagree for postpaid data bundles, so buy shortly before you fly and check the activation note in the du app. Name your line type when you compare: a prepaid du week costs twice a postpaid one. More: e& roaming, du roaming.
A week in India: roaming pack vs eSIM
2.6× cheaper than prepaid packs Free on Virgin Mobile 20 GB+ plans5.6 GB for 7 days (0.8 GB a day, social media and photos): the cheapest prepaid way to get it, and postpaid where it is lower.
On roaming your UAE number also takes calls and SMS; the eSIM is data only. Packs at the operator’s AED price, as listed on 15 Oct 2026; the eSIM at its AED price on 16 Oct, charged in AED by card. Work out your own trip.
Visiting family for a month: which plan lasts
For 30 days at home, Virgin One Country is free, Virgin’s 20GB pack is AED 300.00 (about AED 15.00 per GB), e& Economy is AED 350.00 for 6GB until 10 Jan 2027 and 60 minutes, and du’s 30GB bundle is AED 500.00 but runs 60 days (about AED 16.70 per GB).
| Option | Data · days | AED | about AED per day |
|---|---|---|---|
| Virgin One Country (plans of 20GB+) | your plan’s data · 1 month | 0 | 0 |
| Virgin 20GB pack | 20GB · 30 days | 300 | 10.0 |
| e& Economy Class Pack | 6GB (until 10 Jan 2027, normally 2GB) · 30 days | 350 | 11.7 |
| du long data bundle | 30GB · 60 days | 500 | 8.3 over 60 days |
| 4 du weekly bundles, postpaid | 40GB · 28 days | 400 | 14.3 |
| Our India eSIM | 20GB · 30 days | AED 129.99 | AED 4.33 |
| Our India eSIM | unlimited · 30 days | AED 369.99 | AED 12.33 |
Operator prices as listed on 15 Oct 2026; per-day is our arithmetic. Our unlimited plan runs at full speed up to 3GB a day, then 1 Mbps. Charged in AED by JET SHARING (USA). Your bank may add a foreign-transaction fee; see how to pay.
Virgin One Country, which is free, beats any eSIM. Otherwise set the 20GB eSIM row against AED 300.00, 350 and 500, and size your data in how much data do I need. Skip e&’s Homebound (AED 105.00, 420 or 630 with 5% VAT included): it keeps a prepaid number alive for 30 or 60 days after you leave the UAE for good.
Which network the India eSIM uses, and how to check coverage at home
The network is shown on our India plan page on the date you buy; check mobile coverage in your home city before you go. We promise no network, coverage or speed. See the India eSIM plans.
The plans run on 4G in sizes of 1 to 20GB for 7 to 30 days, plus unlimited for 3 to 30 days, capped at 3GB a day before speed drops to 1 Mbps. Visiting other Asian countries too? The Asia eSIM plans cover 18 destinations including India.
Check coverage in three steps. Ask the relative you are staying with which network gets a full signal inside the house, whether in Kerala, Punjab or Hyderabad. Compare the answer with the network on the plan page that day. Buy only if it matches; otherwise skip the eSIM and keep your Indian plan or a UAE roaming pack. If the eSIM has not connected to any network, you can get a refund within 30 days of purchase.
Keep your UAE number: calls, SMS and WhatsApp
Our India eSIMs are data-only: keep your UAE number on your main SIM for calls and SMS. A call you receive in India costs AED 4.00 a minute on Virgin Mobile UAE and AED 4.25 on e&.
| Line | Receive a call | Call the UAE | SMS you receive |
|---|---|---|---|
| e& | AED 4.25 | AED 9.50 | free |
| du (postpaid) | AED 1.25 | AED 9.00 | no price published |
| Virgin Mobile UAE | AED 4.00 | AED 9.00 | free |
Per minute: e& standard rates (15 Oct 2026), du roaming FAQ (15 Oct 2026), Virgin country rates (15 Oct 2026). For du prepaid, check the du app.
Keep your UAE SIM switched on for SMS; e& and Virgin Mobile don’t charge for SMS you receive abroad; calls you receive are charged per minute. du doesn’t publish a price for SMS you receive abroad, so check with du. WhatsApp messages need mobile data, not minutes. No operator page we read promises that a bank’s SMS codes arrive abroad, so ask your bank how it sends codes before you fly. Our eSIMs are for use outside the UAE; they do not provide service in the UAE. Setup: keep your UAE number.
Check before you fly
What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in India?
Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.
The first is the line for mobile data. On iPhone it is Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data; on Android, the SIM manager. Pick the travel line there; your UAE line stays on for calls and SMS, with its mobile data off.
The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats India as roaming for it.
The third is the APN. On this plan it sets itself, so leave it alone; you don’t need to type one.
The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch airplane mode on and off, and let it find Vi India; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.
Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimgo.ae with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.
What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)
For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, AED 16.99. For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, AED 46.99. If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, AED 149.99, with 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.
I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If you need calls or SMS on your UAE number every day, roaming on your e&, du or Virgin Mobile line keeps them, and some packs include minutes (compare the packs). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.
FAQ
Can an NRI get an India SIM card on arrival?
Jio and
Airtel sell a new prepaid SIM through online Aadhaar KYC with delivery in India; Jio says 2-3 days (15 Oct 2026). Neither lists documents for an NRI without Aadhaar, so ask at a store. We found no page that confirms airport sales.
How do I keep my Indian number active while living in the UAE?
Jio’s Annual IR Plan is INR 2,799 for 365 days and Airtel’s long pack INR 4,999 for 365 days; both list the UAE (15 Oct 2026). Ask the operator what a pack does to your number’s own validity.
Keep my Indian SIM or buy a data eSIM for a month at home?
If your Indian plan is active with enough data, you need nothing else. If it has lapsed, a new SIM needs Aadhaar KYC and delivery in India, while a data eSIM needs no ID check and is installed before you fly.
Which network works best in Kerala, Punjab or Hyderabad?
We have no coverage data by state and promise no network. The network is shown on our India plan page on the date you buy. Ask your host which network gets a full signal inside the house.
