Netherlands SIM card from the UAE: KPN, Odido, roaming or eSIM

How to get mobile data in the Netherlands from the UAE: a data eSIM installed before you fly, from AED 10.99 for 1GB and 7 days (Netherlands eSIM plans), or a plan with minutes if you need to call. For a heavy week, Odido’s SimWallet app sells 7 days of “Unlimited GBs in the Netherlands” for €12.50 (odido.nl, 19 Oct 2026). On du postpaid, 5GB for 7 days is AED 70.00 (19 Oct 2026).

Which Dutch providers sell a SIM or eSIM to visitors?

Two Dutch networks sell something a visitor can use, and neither puts a Dutch number on an eSIM. Among Netherlands eSIM providers, Odido sells a data-only eSIM in its SimWallet app, and KPN sells a data-only TravelSIM for Europe. KPN’s Prepaid SIM does come with a number, but it is a physical card for €4.99, sent by post (KPN, 19 Oct 2026).

Pack prices as listed by e&, du and Virgin Mobile on 19 Oct 2026; AED per GB is our derivation (price ÷ GB). eSIM prices are in AED at the day’s rate: your card is charged exactly that amount.

Two questions decide the route: will you call Dutch numbers, and can a card reach a Dutch address before you need it? If neither applies, a data-only eSIM covers maps, tickets and WhatsApp. If you need calls on an eSIM, neither Dutch eSIM offers them; our Netherlands plans with minutes and SMS do.

What do KPN and Odido charge, and which one needs an address?

KPN’s Prepaid Simkaart costs €4.99 once and needs a postal address: “Je ontvangt je prepaid simkaart per post”, within 2 working days if ordered before 18:00 (KPN, 19 Oct 2026). Odido’s SimWallet needs no address: you buy it in the app, and Odido says “no personal data required”.

KPN’s page says “Geen mogelijkheid voor e-sim” and “De Prepaid simkaart komt standaard zonder internetbundel”, so data is a second purchase. Top speed is 25 Mbit/s down and 10 Mbit/s up on the “KPN 4G Netwerk”. We could not confirm bundle prices, the documents KPN asks for, or delivery outside the Netherlands. From the UAE, plan on another route unless someone in the Netherlands can receive the card.

KPN TravelSIM is a data-only eSIM for the EU, Scandinavia, Switzerland, Andorra and the UK, “From €19.99” (KPN TravelSIM, 19 Oct 2026). The page does not say what volume or how many days the €19.99 buys, so we do not compare it. Once a bundle runs out, an extra 2GB costs €9.99, and 7 more days cost €4.99.

What does a week in the Netherlands cost on e&, du or Virgin Mobile?

A week of data in the Netherlands costs AED 70.00 to AED 200.00 on your UAE line, depending on operator and line type. The Netherlands is in e&’s preferred zone, du’s zone A and Virgin’s pack zone, so these packs apply there (e&, 19 Oct 2026; du, 19 Oct 2026; Virgin Mobile, 19 Oct 2026).

The per-GB column is our arithmetic. Pack rules by operator: e& roaming, du roaming.

Virgin’s One Country pass is free on plans of 20GB and up, but the Netherlands is not among the 34 countries on Virgin’s list (15 Oct 2026). du’s travel eSIM for the Netherlands is about AED 12.85 (US$3.5) for 1GB and 7 days (du, 15 Oct 2026). Without a pack, your UAE line won’t use mobile data abroad; see keep your UAE number.

On roaming your UAE number also takes calls and SMS; the eSIM is data only. Packs at the operator’s AED price, as listed on 19 Oct 2026; the eSIM at its AED price on 20 Oct, charged in AED by card. Work out your own trip.

Do you need calls in the Netherlands: data-only or a plan with minutes?

If you need calls, a Dutch eSIM won’t do it: Odido and KPN TravelSIM, the two local Netherlands eSIM providers, sell data only (19 Oct 2026). Our Netherlands plans come data-only or with minutes and SMS. The Netherlands is one of five destinations where we sell plans with minutes, with the UK, USA, Guam and Israel; the allowance of each plan is on our Netherlands page.

Odido says: “Calling and texting is not possible with your SimWallet eSIM”. KPN says: “You won’t be able to make phone calls or send text messages (SMS).” With either, a call to a hotel or a taxi driver goes over WhatsApp on data, or through your UAE line at roaming rates.

Keep your UAE SIM switched on for SMS; e& and Virgin don’t charge for SMS you receive abroad, and calls you receive are charged per minute. If calls are rare, a data-only plan is enough.

When is a Dutch SIM or Odido eSIM the better buy?

Of the Netherlands eSIM providers, Odido is the better buy for a long stay without calls: 30 days of “Unlimited GBs in the Netherlands” cost €25.00, about €0.83 a day (Odido, 19 Oct 2026). A KPN Prepaid SIM suits a frequent visitor with a Dutch address: a Dutch number on a local network, and credit that does not expire while you use the number once every 6 months.

KPN charges its Dutch rates elsewhere in the EU too: “Gebruik je prepaid binnen de EU dan gelden dezelfde tarieven als in Nederland” (KPN, 19 Oct 2026). Odido’s app also sells data for other countries, from €6.00 for 5GB over 7 days (Odido, 19 Oct 2026).

Our eSIM is the better buy when you need minutes and SMS on an eSIM, or want the price in AED and the eSIM installed at home before the flight. Our unlimited data plan for 7 days is AED 55.99 (about AED 8.00 a day), at full speed up to 3GB a day, then 1 Mbps. For 30 days, 10GB is AED 37.99, and a plan with minutes starts at AED 24.99 for 1GB and 7 days. Charged in AED by JET SHARING (USA). Your bank may add a foreign-transaction fee; see how to pay.

If you run short, a top-up adds data to the same eSIM without a new QR code (top up an eSIM). For the Netherlands and Germany on one trip, a regional plan for Europe covers both on one eSIM; check the countries on Europe eSIM plans and see the Germany SIM card guide.

The EU “roam like at home” rule covers SIMs from EU operators used inside the EU, not a UAE line; see the Europe SIM card guide. Our eSIMs are data-only unless you pick a plan with minutes, and they do not provide service in the UAE. Install before you fly; it connects when you land in the Netherlands.

Check before you fly

What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in the Netherlands?

Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.

The first is the line for mobile data. On iPhone it is Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data; on Android, the SIM manager. Pick the travel line there; your UAE line stays on for calls and SMS, with its mobile data off.

The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats the Netherlands as roaming for it.

The third is the APN. On this plan it sets itself, so leave it alone; you don’t need to type one.

The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch airplane mode on and off, and let it find KPN; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.

Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimgo.ae with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)

For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, AED 10.99. For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, AED 25.99. If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, AED 55.99, with 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.

I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If you need calls or SMS on your UAE number every day, roaming on your e&, du or Virgin Mobile line keeps them, and some packs include minutes (compare the packs). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.

FAQ

Does KPN sell a prepaid eSIM?

No. KPN’s Prepaid Simkaart page says “Geen mogelijkheid voor e-sim” and the card comes by post (KPN, 19 Oct 2026). KPN’s separate TravelSIM is a data-only eSIM from €19.99 with no calls or texts.

Do I need ID for a SIM in the Netherlands?

We could not confirm a 2026 rule. Odido describes its SimWallet eSIM as “Safe and privacy-focused: no personal data required” (odido.nl, 19 Oct 2026). For a KPN SIM, check the documents asked at checkout. Our eSIM has no ID check.

Can I make calls with a Netherlands eSIM?

Only with the right plan. Odido says “Calling and texting is not possible” on SimWallet, and KPN TravelSIM is data only (19 Oct 2026). Our Netherlands plans come data-only or with minutes and SMS; the allowance is on our Netherlands page.

Is the Netherlands in Virgin One Country?

No. The Netherlands is not among the 34 countries on Virgin’s One Country page (15 Oct 2026). A Virgin line needs a paid roaming pack there, from AED 35.00 for 750MB and 1 day.

Will my UAE SIM use data in the Netherlands without a pack?

No. Without a roaming pack, e&, du and Virgin block mobile data abroad. e& lets you unlock pay-as-you-go data for 24 hours by SMS. Keep the UAE SIM in the phone for calls and SMS.
