Australia SIM card from the UAE: Telstra prepaid, roaming or eSIM
An Australia SIM card from Telstra costs AUD 44 for 28 days and 20GB of base data (16 Oct 2026). Australian law requires an ID check at activation, and Telstra’s Pre-Paid ID list has no foreign passport. On your UAE number, a 7-day pack is AED 100.00 on e& prepaid (4GB) or du postpaid (10GB) (15 Oct 2026, 15 Oct 2026), and Virgin Mobile UAE’s One Country pass makes Australia free on plans of 20GB and up. A data-only Australia eSIM on
Optus 5G starts at AED 14.99 for 1GB and 7 days.

Data in Australia from the UAE: the options side by side
You have four routes to data in Australia: a Telstra Pre-Paid SIM on a local network, a roaming pack on your UAE line, Virgin’s One Country pass, and a data eSIM. Telstra is the only one that starts with an Australian ID check.
| Option | Price | What you need | Weak point |
|---|---|---|---|
| e& (Etisalat), du or Virgin Mobile roaming pack | AED 35.00 to AED 1,200.00 a pack from about AED 15.00 per GB | Roaming switched on and a pack bought before you fly | Costs more per GB than the eSIM |
| Pocket Wi-Fi router | Not verified | Collect it, keep it charged and return it | One connection for the group, only while you stay together |
| Local SIM bought on arrival | Not verified | A free SIM slot and a shop after landing | On a one-slot phone it replaces your UAE SIM |
| Travel eSIM from this site | from AED 14.99 by card; from AED 4.10 per GB | An eSIM phone that is not locked to one operator | Data only: no calls or SMS on your UAE number |
Pack prices as listed by e&, du and Virgin Mobile on 15 Oct 2026; AED per GB is our derivation (price ÷ GB). eSIM prices are in AED at the day’s rate: your card is charged exactly that amount.
| Route | Data · validity | Price | Catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Telstra Pre-Paid | 20GB base · 28 days | AUD 44 | ID check by law; “for use in Australia only” |
| e& or du roaming pack | 4GB (e&) or 10GB (du) · 7 days | AED 100.00 | e& weekly pack is prepaid only; du’s 10GB is AED 200.00 on prepaid |
| Virgin One Country | your plan’s data · 1 month | free | plans of 20GB and up; re-activate monthly |
| Our Australia eSIM | 1GB · 7 days | AED 14.99 | data only; Optus 5G |
eSIM for Australia: most chosen plans
Your card is charged exactly AED 14.99; the charge is in UAE dirhams. The seller is registered outside the UAE, so some banks may still add a foreign-merchant fee — how card payment works.
What it costs per day
Plan price in AED ÷ days, at the rate of 17 Oct. A longer plan usually costs less per day: pick by your trip length, not by the lowest daily price.
Telstra Pre-Paid for travellers, and the ID check by law
The Telstra Australia SIM card for travellers is AUD 15 for 7 days or AUD 44 for 28 days, plus a AUD 2 SIM+ Kit that needs “a recharge at an additional cost” (16 Oct 2026). The hard part is the ID, not the price.
Promo prices and bonus data end on 19 Oct and 2 Nov 2026, so we quote base data: AUD 44 buys 20GB, or AUD 1.57 a day and AUD 2.20 per GB (our arithmetic).
ACMA says: “Telcos must get certain information about you (such as your name, address and date of birth) and check your ID when you activate a prepaid mobile service.” For Pre-Paid, Telstra accepts four documents: an Australian driver licence, an Australian passport, ImmiCard or a Medicare card. A foreign passport appears on that page only for Upfront plans.
How a visitor with a UAE or other foreign passport activates Telstra Pre-Paid is not confirmed in anything we read, so ask Telstra before you fly. We did not collect
Optus or
Vodafone tourist offers.
Our catalogue lists no ID check for Australia plans; we have no data on how the ACMA rule applies to travel eSIMs.

e&, du and Virgin Mobile in Australia: two weeks and One Country
Australia sits in the main roaming zone of all three operators. A week on your UAE line costs AED 70.00 to AED 200.00, and two weeks on du postpaid come to AED 200.00 for 20GB (our arithmetic). A single day is AED 35.00: 500MB on e& or du, 750MB on Virgin.
| Pack | Line | Data · days | AED | about AED per day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| e& Weekly Data | prepaid only | 4GB (until 10 Jan 2027) · 7 days | 100.00 | 14.3 |
| du roaming data bundle | postpaid | 5GB · 7 days | 70.00 | 10.0 |
| du roaming data bundle | postpaid | 10GB · 7 days | 100.00 | 14.3 |
| du roaming data bundle | postpaid | unlimited · 7 days | 200.00 | 28.6 |
| Virgin roaming pack | Virgin plan | 20GB · 30 days | 300.00 | 10.0 |
Sources: e&, du postpaid and prepaid, virginmobile.ae (checked 15 Oct 2026, 15 Oct 2026, 15 Oct 2026). The per-day column is our arithmetic. du publishes no fair-use figure for its unlimited bundle. More: du roaming.
Check when the days start. e&’s weekly pack is “Charged upon purchase but validity starts upon first eligible usage”. For du’s postpaid data bundles its API and FAQ disagree, so buy shortly before you fly and check the activation note in the du app. du runs “up to 5 Roaming bundles at the same time”, so they overlap rather than queue. For two weeks, buy the second 10GB bundle when the first week ends.
Australia is on Virgin’s One Country list (34 countries on the page, 15 Oct 2026). You pick one country a month, and it “won’t auto renew”. See Virgin One Country.
Our 7-day Australia eSIM with unlimited data is AED 88.99 (about AED 12.71 a day), at full speed up to 3GB a day, then 1 Mbps. Charged in AED by JET SHARING (USA). Your bank may add a foreign-transaction fee; see how to pay. du also sells a travel eSIM for Australia, from US$4.5 (about AED 16.53) for 1GB and 7 days (du, 15 Oct 2026).
Keep your UAE SIM switched on for SMS; e& and Virgin don’t charge for SMS you receive abroad; calls you receive are charged per minute. du doesn’t publish a price for SMS you receive abroad.
A week in Australia: roaming pack vs eSIM
2.8× cheaper than prepaid packs Free on Virgin Mobile 20 GB+ plans5.6 GB for 7 days (0.8 GB a day, social media and photos): the cheapest prepaid way to get it, and postpaid where it is lower.
On roaming your UAE number also takes calls and SMS; the eSIM is data only. Packs at the operator’s AED price, as listed on 15 Oct 2026; the eSIM at its AED price on 17 Oct, charged in AED by card. Work out your own trip.
A long trip to Australia: 28 days and more
On a stay of 28 days or more, Telstra Pre-Paid runs AUD 44 for 28 days, AUD 200 for 6 months and AUD 395 for 12 months (16 Oct 2026). Thirty days of 10GB on an Australia eSIM is AED 55.99.
Telstra’s 6-month plan has 80GB of base data and the 12-month plan 180GB; the bigger figures on its page are an activation bonus that ends on 2 Nov 2026.
Telstra’s 20GB base over 28 days is about 0.71GB a day, and 10GB over 30 days about 0.33GB. Unlimited data for 30 days runs at full speed up to 3GB a day, then 1 Mbps; that is up to 90GB at full speed (our arithmetic). To set your own number, use how much data do I need.
Telstra’s Pre-Paid Plans are “for use in Australia only”. On a long stay, Virgin’s pack ends after 30 days and One Country after a calendar month, so three months means three re-activations. An eSIM plan can be topped up.
Our Australia eSIMs are data-only: keep your UAE number on your main SIM for calls and SMS (keep your UAE number). Our eSIMs are for use outside the UAE; they do not provide service in the UAE. Install before you fly; it connects when you land in Australia. For more than one country, the regional plan is among the Oceania eSIM plans; Australia alone is on Australia eSIM plans.
Check before you fly
What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in Australia?
Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.
The first is the line for mobile data. On iPhone it is Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data; on Android, the SIM manager. Pick the travel line there; your UAE line stays on for calls and SMS, with its mobile data off.
The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats Australia as roaming for it.
The third is the APN. On this plan it sets itself, so leave it alone; you don’t need to type one.
The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch airplane mode on and off, and let it find Optus; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.
Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimgo.ae with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.
What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)
For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, AED 14.99. For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, AED 32.99. If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, AED 88.99, with 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.
I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If you need calls or SMS on your UAE number every day, roaming on your e&, du or Virgin Mobile line keeps them, and some packs include minutes (compare the packs). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.
FAQ
Can I buy an Australian SIM card with my passport?
Telstra’s Pre-Paid ID list names an Australian driver licence, Australian passport, ImmiCard and Medicare card (16 Oct 2026); a foreign passport is not on it. We could not confirm how a visitor activates, so ask Telstra before you fly.
Do Australian prepaid SIM cards need ID?
Yes. ACMA says telcos “must get certain information about you (such as your name, address and date of birth) and check your ID when you activate a prepaid mobile service” (page updated 21 September 2026).
Is Australia in Virgin One Country?
Yes. Australia is on Virgin Mobile UAE’s list of 34 countries on its page (15 Oct 2026). The pass is free for one calendar month on plans of 20GB and up, and it does not renew itself.
Is there an unlimited eSIM for Australia?
Yes, in 3, 5, 7, 10, 15 and 30 days. Speed is full up to 3GB a day, then 1 Mbps. Each plan has a price in AED on our Australia eSIM page.
Does my UAE SIM use data in Australia without a pack?
Your e&, du or Virgin line won’t use mobile data abroad unless you add a roaming pack (e& lets you unlock pay-as-you-go data for 24 hours by SMS). du and Virgin have no pay-as-you-go data abroad at all.
