Sri Lanka SIM card from the UAE: Dialog, Mobitel, roaming or eSIM
From the UAE you have three ways to get data in Sri Lanka: a Sri Lanka SIM card bought at the airport, a roaming pack on your UAE line, or a data eSIM installed before you fly. Mobitel’s tourist plan costs LKR 821 for 15GB and 7 days, and
Dialog’s starts at LKR 1,399 for 20GB (16 Oct 2026). On your UAE line, du postpaid sells 10GB for 7 days at AED 100.00 (15 Oct 2026). A data-only Sri Lanka eSIM starts at AED 12.99 for 1GB and 7 days.

The tourist plans are built for foreigners. Mobitel’s FAQ says “You only need your foreign passport”, and Dialog asks a non-local buyer for the “Passport (original)” (16 Oct 2026). If you hold a Sri Lankan passport, we have no document list for citizens, so check with Dialog or Mobitel before you fly. Sri Lanka’s tourism authority (SLTDA) counted 5,656 arrivals with residence in the UAE in 2025, up 31.7% from 4,296 in 2024. It counts foreigners only, so Sri Lankans living in the UAE are not in that figure.
We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here; eSIM Go is not affiliated with e&, du, Virgin Mobile UAE, Dialog or SLT-Mobitel.
Data on a trip to Sri Lanka: four ways from the UAE
Four routes lead to data in Sri Lanka: a Sri Lankan SIM you already hold, a tourist SIM from LKR 821, a roaming pack from AED 100.00 a week, or a data eSIM from AED 12.99. Sri Lanka is in the main roaming zone of e&, du and Virgin Mobile UAE, but not on Virgin’s One Country list (34 countries on the page, 15 Oct 2026).
| Option | Price | What you need | Weak point |
|---|---|---|---|
| e& (Etisalat), du or Virgin Mobile roaming pack | AED 35.00 to AED 1,200.00 a pack from about AED 15.00 per GB | Roaming switched on and a pack bought before you fly | Costs more per GB than the eSIM |
| Pocket Wi-Fi router | Not verified | Collect it, keep it charged and return it | One connection for the group, only while you stay together |
| Local SIM bought on arrival | Not verified | A free SIM slot and a shop after landing | On a one-slot phone it replaces your UAE SIM |
| Travel eSIM from this site | from AED 12.99 by card; from AED 4.10 per GB | An eSIM phone that is not locked to one operator | Data only: no calls or SMS on your UAE number |
Pack prices as listed by e&, du and Virgin Mobile on 15 Oct 2026; AED per GB is our derivation (price ÷ GB). eSIM prices are in AED at the day’s rate: your card is charged exactly that amount.
Your UAE line won’t use mobile data in Sri Lanka unless you add a roaming pack (e& lets you unlock pay-as-you-go data for 24 hours by SMS). We have no data on keeping a Sri Lankan number active in roaming, so ask Dialog or Mobitel before you fly.
eSIM for Sri Lanka: most chosen plans
Your card is charged exactly AED 12.99; the charge is in UAE dirhams. The seller is registered outside the UAE, so some banks may still add a foreign-merchant fee — how card payment works.
What it costs per day
Plan price in AED ÷ days, at the rate of 16 Oct. A longer plan usually costs less per day: pick by your trip length, not by the lowest daily price.
Dialog or Mobitel tourist SIM at Colombo airport
Of the two operators we checked, Mobitel has the cheaper airport SIM: LKR 821 for 15GB over 7 days; Dialog’s cheapest is LKR 1,399 for 20GB on a monthly rental. Both sell in the arrival lobby and ask for your passport; Mobitel names Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), near Colombo (16 Oct 2026).
| Plan | Data | LKR (tax inc.) | Validity | LKR per GB (our arithmetic) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dialog Tourists Plan | 20GB | 1,399 | monthly rental | 70 |
| Dialog Tourists Plan | 30GB | 1,799 | monthly rental | 60 |
| Dialog Tourists Plan | 50GB | 2,450 | monthly rental | 49 |
| SLT-Mobitel Plan 01 | 15GB | 821 | 7 days | 55 |
| SLT-Mobitel Plan 02 | 30GB | 1,540 | 30 days | 51 |
| SLT-Mobitel Plan 03 | “Non-stop Data * FUP and Conditions apply” | 5,131 | 30 days | not calculable |
Sources: Dialog, tourist SIM; SLT-Mobitel, visiting Sri Lanka (16 Oct 2026). Dialog prints its own “~USD” figures beside the rupee prices; we do not convert them to AED.
Dialog. “Right after the customs desk in the Arrival lobby, you’ll find two Dialog Airport Stores.” You present your passport there to activate a prepaid SIM, and the minimum age is 16. Activate a plan with “#778#” and check usage with “#456#”. The 50GB plan also lists WhatsApp as “Unlimited” in Dialog’s table.
Dialog also sells a Tourist eSIM online: reserve it, then collect it at the airport store with your passport and order number. One r/srilanka commenter (17 Mar 2026), asked about a lost Dialog eSIM QR code, wrote: “You have to visit the branch. And honestly having a physical SIM is easier cuz in case something your phone breaks or something when their branches are closed you’ll have to wait till the next working day to set up a new phone with your SIM.” That is one person’s experience.
Mobitel. SLT-Mobitel counters stand in the BIA arrival lobby and at Mattala and Jaffna airports. Mobitel lists unlimited local calls and “1000 To Any Network” SMS on all three plans. Bring your passport (Mobitel may also take your photo at the counter).
You can also request a Mobitel eSIM “at the Arrival lobby or any SLT Mobitel Outlet”. Check your balance with “*100#”. Data top-ups cost LKR 652 for 8.4GB over 14 days or LKR 1,343 for 20GB over 30 days.

e&, du and Virgin Mobile packs for Sri Lanka
A week of data on your UAE line starts at AED 100.00 at e& (prepaid), du (postpaid) or Virgin Mobile UAE. For that price you get 4GB at e& until 10 Jan 2027, 10GB at du postpaid and 2GB at Virgin. e& postpaid has no data-only weekly pack.
| Option | Data · days | AED |
|---|---|---|
| du bundle, postpaid | 10GB · 7 days | 100 |
| du bundle, prepaid | 10GB · 7 days | 200 |
| e& Weekly Data Pack (prepaid) | 4GB · 7 days (until 10 Jan 2027, normally 2GB) | 100 |
| Virgin weekly pack | 2GB · 7 days | 100 |
| Virgin One Country | Sri Lanka not listed | n/a |
Sources: e& (15 Oct 2026); du postpaid and prepaid (15 Oct 2026); Virgin (15 Oct 2026). Virgin’s One Country pass offers “a FREE Data Roaming Pass” to one country on 20GB+ plans, but Sri Lanka is not on its list. More: e& roaming, du roaming, Virgin Mobile roaming.
A week in Sri Lanka: roaming pack vs eSIM
3.1× cheaper than prepaid packs5.6 GB for 7 days (0.8 GB a day, social media and photos): the cheapest prepaid way to get it, and postpaid where it is lower.
On roaming your UAE number also takes calls and SMS; the eSIM is data only. Packs at the operator’s AED price, as listed on 15 Oct 2026; the eSIM at its AED price on 16 Oct, charged in AED by card. Work out your own trip.
A month at home without an unlimited plan
Our Sri Lanka eSIM tops out at 20GB for 30 days and has no unlimited plan, while Mobitel sells a 30-day “Non-stop Data” plan at LKR 5,131 with “FUP and Conditions apply” (16 Oct 2026). If you are visiting family for a month, you buy two packs or top up the same eSIM.
The eSIM alternative has its own limits. Our Sri Lanka eSIMs run on Dialog and Hutchison, LTE, in sizes from 1GB to 20GB. Mobitel is on our Asia regional plan, not on the Sri Lanka plan. We have not collected Hutch’s own local prices, so Hutch is not in the table above.
| Our Sri Lanka eSIM | Data · days | AED |
|---|---|---|
| Small | 1GB · 7 days | AED 12.99 |
| Medium | 10GB · 30 days | AED 50.99 |
| Large | 20GB · 30 days | AED 81.99 |
The 20GB plan costs about AED 2.73 a day (our arithmetic). Next to it, Mobitel’s 30GB plan is LKR 1,540 for 30 days and Dialog’s 30GB plan LKR 1,799 a month; both are in rupees and we do not convert them. On your UAE line a month costs more: Virgin’s 20GB pack is AED 300.00 for 30 days, e& Economy Class AED 350.00 for 30 days (6GB until 10 Jan 2027, normally 2GB, 60 minutes) and du’s 30GB bundle AED 500.00 for 60 days (15 Oct 2026). Details: how much data do I need and the Asia eSIM plan.
Charged in AED by JET SHARING (USA). Your bank may add a foreign-transaction fee; see how to pay.
Our eSIMs for Sri Lanka are data-only: no calls, no SMS, no number. Keep your UAE SIM in the phone for those; calls you receive abroad are charged per minute, and no operator page we read promises that bank SMS codes arrive, so ask your bank. Setup: keep your UAE number.
Our eSIMs are for use outside the UAE; they do not provide service in the UAE. Install before you fly; it connects when you land in Sri Lanka, and the days count from then. If the eSIM has not connected to any network, you can get a refund within 30 days of purchase.
Check before you fly
What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in Sri Lanka?
Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.
The first is the line for mobile data. On iPhone it is Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data; on Android, the SIM manager. Pick the travel line there; your UAE line stays on for calls and SMS, with its mobile data off.
The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats Sri Lanka as roaming for it.
The third is the APN. On this plan it sets itself, so leave it alone; you don’t need to type one.
The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch airplane mode on and off, and let it find Dialog and Hutchison; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.
Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimgo.ae with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.
What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)
For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, AED 12.99. For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, AED 29.99.
I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If you need calls or SMS on your UAE number every day, roaming on your e&, du or Virgin Mobile line keeps them, and some packs include minutes (compare the packs). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.
FAQ
What SIM works in Sri Lanka?
Dialog and SLT-Mobitel both sell a Sri Lanka SIM card for tourists at the airport, from LKR 1,399 for 20GB and LKR 821 for 15GB (16 Oct 2026). From the UAE you can also add a roaming pack from AED 100.00 a week, or install a data eSIM on Dialog and Hutchison before you fly.
What is the best internet package in Sri Lanka?
We do not rank them. On 16 Oct 2026 the cheapest per GB are Dialog’s 50GB plan at LKR 2,450 (LKR 49 a GB) and Mobitel’s 30GB plan at LKR 1,540 (LKR 51 a GB), our arithmetic. For one week, Mobitel’s 15GB plan is LKR 821; Dialog’s tourist plans are monthly rentals.
Where to buy a Dialog SIM at Colombo airport?
Dialog says that “Right after the customs desk in the Arrival lobby, you’ll find two Dialog Airport Stores”. Bring your original passport; Dialog allows “A maximum of 5 Connections (Both Prepaid and Postpaid)” (16 Oct 2026). Dialog’s page names neither the airport nor the store hours, so check both with Dialog before you fly.
Dialog tourist SIM vs eSIM?
A Dialog tourist SIM gives you a Sri Lankan number, local calls and SMS, but you buy it after you land and your passport is checked. Our data eSIM needs no ID check and installs before you fly, but it has no number, calls or SMS. Most plans, including Sri Lanka, set the APN automatically on iPhone and Android.
Can I keep my Sri Lankan number while using an eSIM?
Our eSIM has no phone number, so it neither replaces nor moves a Sri Lankan number. We have no facts on keeping a Sri Lankan number in roaming, so ask Dialog or Mobitel. Your UAE number stays on its own SIM for calls and SMS.
