Vodacom, MTN or an eSIM: what fits a South Africa trip?
The right South Africa SIM card depends on your days, your calls and the paperwork. A week of maps in Cape Town fits a roaming pack or a data eSIM. A month with local calls fits a Vodacom Travel SIM on a local network, which works only after RICA registration with your passport.
| Option | Price | What you need | Weak point |
|---|---|---|---|
| e& (Etisalat), du or Virgin Mobile roaming pack | AED 35.00 to AED 1,200.00 a pack from about AED 15.00 per GB | Roaming switched on and a pack bought before you fly | Costs more per GB than the eSIM |
| Pocket Wi-Fi router | Not verified | Collect it, keep it charged and return it | One connection for the group, only while you stay together |
| Local SIM bought on arrival | Not verified | A free SIM slot and a shop after landing | On a one-slot phone it replaces your UAE SIM |
| Travel eSIM from this site | from AED 14.99 by card; from AED 6.00 per GB | An eSIM phone that is not locked to one operator | Data only: no calls or SMS on your UAE number |
Pack prices as listed by e&, du and Virgin Mobile on 19 Oct 2026; AED per GB is our derivation (price ÷ GB). eSIM prices are in AED at the day’s rate: your card is charged exactly that amount.
Your UAE line alone won’t do. e&, du and Virgin Mobile block mobile data abroad until you add a roaming pack; e& lets you unlock pay-as-you-go data for 24 hours by SMS.
eSIM for South Africa: most chosen plans
Your card is charged exactly AED 14.99; the charge is in UAE dirhams. The seller is registered outside the UAE, so some banks may still add a foreign-merchant fee — how card payment works.
What it costs per day
Plan price in AED ÷ days, at the rate of 20 Oct. A longer plan usually costs less per day: pick by your trip length, not by the lowest daily price.
What do Vodacom and MTN travel bundles cost at the airport?
Vodacom’s Travel Bundles cost R299 for 3GB, R449 for 5GB and R699 for 10GB, each valid 30 days (Vodacom, 19 Oct 2026). MTN’s terms list 10GB at R499 and 20GB plus 20GB of night data at R699, also for 30 days (MTN, 19 Oct 2026).
Each Vodacom bundle also carries minutes to any network, airtime and SMS. R299 adds 30 minutes, R50 airtime and 30 SMS; R449 adds 50 minutes, R100 and 50 SMS; R699 adds 100 minutes, R150 and 100 SMS. Vodacom calls it “a once off allocation that does not automatically recur”, and unused data is forfeited at 23:59 on the 30th day after purchase.
Our arithmetic: R299 for 3GB is about R100 a GB, R699 for 10GB about R70 a GB, and MTN’s R499 for 10GB about R50 a GB. MTN’s table lists no minutes or airtime, so its cheaper gigabyte comes without local calls. We quote the operators’ prices in rand, with no conversion to a price in AED and no tax added.
MTN’s bundles are “exclusive to all new MTN Prepaid Tourists customers with a valid passport”, sold at MTN Stores at OR Tambo, Cape Town International and King Shaka airports. The night data works from 00:00 to 04:59, and “Roaming on MTN Traveller Bundles will not be available.” These terms date from an offer that began on 25 Feb 2020. We could not confirm it is on sale today. For a South Africa SIM card at the airport, Vodacom’s offer is the one we could confirm.

What does a week in South Africa cost on e&, du or Virgin Mobile?
On your UAE line, a week of data in South Africa costs AED 100.00 on e& prepaid, du postpaid or Virgin Mobile. Only the volume differs: e& gives 4GB (until 10 Jan 2027, normally 2GB), du 10GB and Virgin 2GB (e&, 19 Oct 2026; du, 19 Oct 2026; Virgin Mobile, 19 Oct 2026). All three put South Africa in their main roaming zone.
Roaming wins on Virgin plans of 20GB and up: Virgin One Country gives a free monthly pass that uses your plan’s data. South Africa is on Virgin’s list of 34 countries (15 Oct 2026). Re-activate it in the Virgin app each month: “It won’t auto renew.”
du also sells its own travel eSIM for South Africa: about AED 34.89 (US$9.50) for 1GB over 7 days, or about AED 143.23 (US$39.00) for 5GB over 30 days (du, 15 Oct 2026).
Our South Africa plan: unlimited data for 7 days is AED 134.99 (about AED 19.28 a day), at full speed up to 3GB a day, then 1 Mbps; 10GB for 30 days is AED 81.99. Charged in AED by JET SHARING (USA). Your bank may add a foreign-transaction fee; see how to pay.
Install it before you fly; it connects when you land in South Africa, and its days count from then. It is data-only, so calls and SMS stay on your UAE SIM (keep your UAE number). Keep that SIM switched on for SMS: e& and Virgin don’t charge for SMS you receive abroad, and calls you receive are charged per minute. Our eSIM does not provide service in the UAE. A top-up goes on the same eSIM, with no new QR code.
A week in South Africa: roaming pack vs eSIM
2.2× cheaper than prepaid packs Free on Virgin Mobile 20 GB+ plans5.6 GB for 7 days (0.8 GB a day, social media and photos): the cheapest prepaid way to get it, and postpaid where it is lower.
On roaming your UAE number also takes calls and SMS; the eSIM is data only. Packs at the operator’s AED price, as listed on 19 Oct 2026; the eSIM at its AED price on 20 Oct, charged in AED by card. Work out your own trip.
What is RICA, and does it apply to an eSIM from abroad?
RICA is South Africa’s SIM registration law: an operator there may not activate a SIM until the buyer’s details are on record. For a South Africa SIM card bought on arrival, Vodacom says “Foreign nationals require a valid passport” and “RICA registration is free” (Vodacom, 19 Oct 2026). On our reading of the Act, a SIM or eSIM from abroad that roams there falls outside it.
Vodacom applies the rule to “prepaid, contract, physical SIMs, and eSIMs”. The address step is where the sources differ. Vodacom says “Proof of address may be required depending on the registration type”. MTN asks for your original passport and “proof of residential address” in a face-to-face check (MTN, 19 Oct 2026). Bring your original passport and your accommodation address.
Section 40 of the RICA Act asks a visitor for full names, the passport number, at least one address and the country that issued the passport. On our reading, it asks for an address, not for a document that proves it. Section 40(1)(b) exempts a customer of a mobile provider outside South Africa who enters the country and uses a South African network (justice.gov.za, 19 Oct 2026).
So a SIM or eSIM from a provider outside South Africa that roams there is not RICA-registered in South Africa. That is our reading, not legal advice. Our plan has no ID check when you buy it.
When is a Vodacom Travel SIM the better buy?
A Vodacom Travel SIM is the better buy for a stay of up to 30 days with calls inside South Africa. R299 brings 3GB with 30 minutes to any network and R50 airtime; R699 brings 10GB with 100 minutes and R150. Our eSIM is data-only, with no South African number.
For a week, the eSIM is simpler: it connects on landing, and there is no RICA step at a store. Its days count from the first connection. Vodacom’s allocation ends at 23:59 on the 30th day after purchase, however many of those days you spend in the country. On a 10-day trip, 20 of the 30 days go unused (our arithmetic).
For South Africa with Kenya or Mauritius on one trip, the Africa regional plan lists all three countries. For a safari, see the Kenya SIM card guide; for an island stop, the Mauritius SIM card guide.
Check before you fly
What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in South Africa?
Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.
The first is the line for mobile data. On iPhone it is Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data; on Android, the SIM manager. Pick the travel line there; your UAE line stays on for calls and SMS, with its mobile data off.
The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats South Africa as roaming for it.
The third is the APN. On this plan it sets itself, so leave it alone; you don’t need to type one.
The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch airplane mode on and off, and let it find Vodacom and MTN; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.
Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimgo.ae with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.
What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)
For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, AED 14.99. For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, AED 46.99. If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, AED 134.99, with 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.
I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If you need calls or SMS on your UAE number every day, roaming on your e&, du or Virgin Mobile line keeps them, and some packs include minutes (compare the packs). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.
FAQ
Can I buy a SIM at Cape Town or Johannesburg airport?
Yes. Vodacom sells its Travel Bundles at “Vodacom Airport Stores and participating Retailers” (Vodacom, 19 Oct 2026). MTN’s terms list MTN Stores at OR Tambo in Johannesburg, Cape Town International and King Shaka in Durban (MTN, 19 Oct 2026). Take your passport for RICA.
What do I need for RICA?
Your original passport and your accommodation address. Vodacom says “Foreign nationals require a valid passport”, that registration is free and that proof of address “may be required” (Vodacom, 19 Oct 2026). MTN asks for proof of residential address in a face-to-face check (MTN, 19 Oct 2026).
Does RICA apply to my travel eSIM?
Not if it comes from a provider outside South Africa and roams there. Section 40(1)(b) of the RICA Act exempts a customer of a mobile provider outside South Africa who uses a South African network (justice.gov.za, 19 Oct 2026). That is our reading of the Act, not legal advice. Our eSIM has no ID check when you buy it.
Is South Africa in Virgin One Country?
Yes, on Virgin plans of 20GB and up. Virgin lists South Africa among the 34 countries on its One Country page, where the monthly pass is free (Virgin Mobile UAE, 15 Oct 2026). The pass draws on your plan’s data and must be re-activated in the Virgin app every month.
Is there an unlimited eSIM for South Africa?
Yes, with a daily limit. Our South Africa unlimited plans run at full speed up to 3GB a day, then slow to 1 Mbps. They are data-only, with no South African number for local calls.
