csl, 3HK or an eSIM: what fits a Hong Kong trip from the UAE?
It depends on how much data you need and whether you want a registration step on arrival. An HK SIM card from csl or 3HK puts you on a local network with a Hong Kong number, but needs your passport before it activates. A roaming pack keeps your UAE number. A data eSIM installs at home and asks for no ID.
| Option | Price | What you need | Weak point |
|---|---|---|---|
| e& (Etisalat), du or Virgin Mobile roaming pack | AED 35.00 to AED 1,200.00 a pack from about AED 15.00 per GB | Roaming switched on and a pack bought before you fly | Costs more per GB than the eSIM |
| Pocket Wi-Fi router | Not verified | Collect it, keep it charged and return it | One connection for the group, only while you stay together |
| Local SIM bought on arrival | Not verified | A free SIM slot and a shop after landing | On a one-slot phone it replaces your UAE SIM |
| Travel eSIM from this site | from AED 14.99 by card; from AED 4.30 per GB | An eSIM phone that is not locked to one operator | Data only: no calls or SMS on your UAE number |
Pack prices as listed by e&, du and Virgin Mobile on 19 Oct 2026; AED per GB is our derivation (price ÷ GB). eSIM prices are in AED at the day’s rate: your card is charged exactly that amount.
Doing nothing is not an option. Your e&, du or Virgin Mobile line won’t use mobile data abroad unless you add a roaming pack (e& lets you unlock pay-as-you-go data for 24 hours by SMS).
eSIM for Hong Kong: most chosen plans
Your card is charged exactly AED 14.99; the charge is in UAE dirhams. The seller is registered outside the UAE, so some banks may still add a foreign-merchant fee — how card payment works.
What it costs per day
Plan price in AED ÷ days, at the rate of 20 Oct. A longer plan usually costs less per day: pick by your trip length, not by the lowest daily price.
What does csl’s tourist SIM cost, and what do the passes add?
The csl Discover Hong Kong Tourist SIM is HKD 88 for 7 days or HKD 118 for 15 days, with unlimited Hong Kong local calls (csl, 19 Oct 2026). Its data covers Hong Kong and Macau. csl’s own pages give different data figures, so we quote none. The csl e-shop listed the eSIM versions at HKD 68 and HKD 88 that day, which are sale prices.
You buy it in the csl shop, at the Hong Kong Tourism Board Kowloon Visitor Centre at the Star Ferry Concourse in Tsim Sha Tsui, or at 7-Eleven. We could not confirm airport counters.
On csl’s 5G HK Tourist SIM, data comes as top-up passes: HKD 8 for 1 day and 5GB, HKD 18 for 3 days and 15GB, HKD 48 for 7 days and 50GB, then 512 kbps (csl, 19 Oct 2026). Our arithmetic: that is HKD 1.60, HKD 1.20 and HKD 0.96 a GB, so the longer pass is the cheaper one per GB. The 7-day pass works out to about 7.1GB a day. We could not confirm the price of the card itself.
3 Hong Kong lists a 30-day local plan “as low as” HKD 50 and a 24-hour plan at HKD 10 (3HK, 19 Oct 2026). The page gives no data volumes, so we do not treat it as a tourist plan.

What does a week in Hong Kong cost on e&, du or Virgin Mobile?
A week of data in Hong Kong is AED 100.00 on e& prepaid for 4GB (until 10 Jan 2027, normally 2GB), AED 70.00 on du postpaid for 5GB and AED 100.00 on Virgin for 2GB. Hong Kong sits in e&’s preferred zone, du’s zone A and Virgin’s pack zone (e&, 19 Oct 2026; du, 19 Oct 2026; Virgin Mobile, 19 Oct 2026).
Hong Kong is not in Virgin’s One Country list of 34 countries (15 Oct 2026), so Virgin’s free pass does not apply. du’s other bundles: du roaming.
Our Hong Kong plan: unlimited data for 7 days is AED 98.99 (about AED 14.14 a day), at full speed up to 3GB a day, then 1 Mbps. 10GB for 30 days is AED 42.99. Charged in AED by JET SHARING (USA). Your bank may add a foreign-transaction fee; see how to pay.
Install it before you fly; it connects when you land in Hong Kong, and the days count from that first connection. Our eSIM does not provide service in the UAE. Every size and its price in AED are on our Hong Kong eSIM plans page; a top-up adds data to the same eSIM without a new QR code.
It is data-only: calls and SMS stay on your UAE SIM (keep your UAE number). Keep that SIM switched on for SMS; e& and Virgin don’t charge for SMS you receive abroad, and calls you receive are charged per minute. On Android, Hong Kong needs the APN entered by hand: APN settings.
A week in Hong Kong: roaming pack vs eSIM
3.4× cheaper than prepaid packs5.6 GB for 7 days (0.8 GB a day, social media and photos): the cheapest prepaid way to get it, and postpaid where it is lower.
On roaming your UAE number also takes calls and SMS; the eSIM is data only. Packs at the operator’s AED price, as listed on 19 Oct 2026; the eSIM at its AED price on 20 Oct, charged in AED by card. Work out your own trip.
Do visitors have to register a Hong Kong SIM?
Yes. Under the rules of Hong Kong’s regulator, OFCA, every HK SIM card, prepaid ones included, needs real-name registration before activation (OFCA, 19 Oct 2026). A visitor without a Hong Kong ID card uses a valid passport or travel document, presented in original. One person can register up to 10 prepaid cards with one operator.
With csl you insert the SIM, wait for the registration SMS and complete the steps to activate it; csl states “Real-name registration required before use” (csl, 19 Oct 2026). 3HK accepts “visitors travel documents” and sends a link by SMS (3HK, 19 Oct 2026).
Plan the step for arrival: passport in hand, a phone that can take the SMS, and a connection to open the registration page. An eSIM from us has no ID check, so nothing waits for you at the airport.
Hong Kong plus Macao or mainland China: which plan?
For Hong Kong plus Macao or mainland China, one regional plan is simpler than two local SIMs. Our Asia plan lists 18 destinations, among them Hong Kong, Macao and China, in sizes from 500MB for 3 days to 100GB for 180 days (Asia eSIM plans).
csl’s tourist SIM names Hong Kong and Macau data only. For the China half of the trip, see the China SIM card guide.
When is a csl tourist SIM the better buy?
A csl HK SIM card is the better buy for a week of heavy data or for local calls. On csl’s 5G HK Tourist SIM, the HKD 48 pass gives 50GB over 7 days, about 7.1GB a day (our arithmetic), against 3GB a day at full speed on our unlimited plan, then 1 Mbps. The Discover Hong Kong tourist SIM includes unlimited local calls, which a data-only eSIM does not have.
Our eSIM is the better buy when you do not want to register on arrival, or when the route runs from Hong Kong into Macao or China on one plan. It also suits a short stop: install at home, and the plan starts when you connect.
Check before you fly
What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in Hong Kong?
Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.
The first is the line for mobile data. On iPhone it is Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data; on Android, the SIM manager. Pick the travel line there; your UAE line stays on for calls and SMS, with its mobile data off.
The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats Hong Kong as roaming for it.
The third is the APN. The plan does not set it by itself here: add wbdata on Android under the eSIM line’s mobile network settings.
The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch airplane mode on and off, and let it find Hong Kong Telecommunications (HKT); this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.
Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimgo.ae with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.
What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)
For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, AED 14.99. For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, AED 25.99. If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, AED 98.99, with 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.
I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If you need calls or SMS on your UAE number every day, roaming on your e&, du or Virgin Mobile line keeps them, and some packs include minutes (compare the packs). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.
FAQ
Can a foreigner get a SIM card in Hong Kong?
Yes, with a passport. Hong Kong requires every SIM to be registered before it works, and a visitor without a Hong Kong ID card can use a valid travel document or passport, shown in original (OFCA, 19 Oct 2026). Hong Kong and BN(O) passports are not accepted for this route.
How much is the csl tourist SIM?
HKD 88 for 7 days and HKD 118 for 15 days, with unlimited local calls (csl, 19 Oct 2026). The csl online shop showed HKD 68 and HKD 88 as reduced prices that day. We quote no data figure because csl’s own pages disagree on it.
Does a Hong Kong SIM work in Macao?
On csl’s tourist SIM, yes: its data allowance is for Hong Kong and Macau (csl, 19 Oct 2026). Our Asia regional plan lists both Hong Kong and Macao among its 18 destinations, so one eSIM covers a trip to the two.
Do I need to set an APN for a Hong Kong eSIM?
On Android, yes: our Hong Kong plans need the access point name entered by hand. iPhone sets it automatically. The steps are in our APN help page.
Is Hong Kong in Virgin One Country?
No. Hong Kong is not among the 34 countries on Virgin Mobile UAE’s One Country list (Virgin Mobile UAE, 15 Oct 2026). A Virgin line needs a paid roaming pack there.
