Malaysia SIM card from the UAE: Hotlink, CelcomDigi, roaming or eSIM
A Malaysia SIM card for tourists costs RM25 for 7 days at Hotlink (40GB) and at CelcomDigi (100GB, RM18 on offer) on 16 Oct 2026. Both ask for your original passport and a hotel booking. On your UAE line a week costs AED 100.00 on e& prepaid, du postpaid or Virgin Mobile UAE. A data-only eSIM on
Maxis 5G starts at AED 12.99 for 1GB and 7 days. We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here, and eSIM Go is not affiliated with e&, du, Virgin Mobile UAE, Maxis or CelcomDigi.

Data in Malaysia from the UAE: the options side by side
Four routes get you online in Malaysia: a Hotlink or CelcomDigi tourist SIM from RM25, a weekly pack on your e&, du or Virgin Mobile UAE line from AED 100.00, Virgin’s free One Country pass, or a data eSIM installed before you fly. Only the local SIM needs a passport check and a hotel booking.
| Option | Price | What you need | Weak point |
|---|---|---|---|
| e& (Etisalat), du or Virgin Mobile roaming pack | AED 35.00 to AED 1,200.00 a pack from about AED 15.00 per GB | Roaming switched on and a pack bought before you fly | Costs more per GB than the eSIM |
| Pocket Wi-Fi router | Not verified | Collect it, keep it charged and return it | One connection for the group, only while you stay together |
| Local SIM bought on arrival | Not verified | A free SIM slot and a shop after landing | On a one-slot phone it replaces your UAE SIM |
| Travel eSIM from this site | from AED 12.99 by card; from AED 3.70 per GB | An eSIM phone that is not locked to one operator | Data only: no calls or SMS on your UAE number |
Pack prices as listed by e&, du and Virgin Mobile on 15 Oct 2026; AED per GB is our derivation (price ÷ GB). eSIM prices are in AED at the day’s rate: your card is charged exactly that amount.
| Route | Passport and hotel booking | Beyond Malaysia | Your UAE number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hotlink Travel SIM | Yes | Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia | Stays only if the phone has a second slot or eSIM |
| CelcomDigi Tourist SIM | Yes | 14-day and longer passes: 3GB in 10 ASEAN countries | Same as Hotlink |
| UAE operator pack or One Country | No | Other countries in your operator’s zone; One Country covers one | Same SIM, same number |
| Data eSIM | No ID check on ours | One country per plan, or the Asia regional plan | Stays on your main SIM |
The rows are our synthesis of
Maxis, CelcomDigi and MCMC (16 Oct 2026) and e&, du and Virgin Mobile UAE (15 Oct 2026).
eSIM for Malaysia: most chosen plans
Your card is charged exactly AED 12.99; the charge is in UAE dirhams. The seller is registered outside the UAE, so some banks may still add a foreign-merchant fee — how card payment works.
What it costs per day
Plan price in AED ÷ days, at the rate of 17 Oct. A longer plan usually costs less per day: pick by your trip length, not by the lowest daily price.
Hotlink and CelcomDigi tourist SIMs: passport, hotel booking, FUP
Both tourist SIMs need your original passport and a hotel booking, and both quote data as fair-use (FUP) volumes. Hotlink’s passes run 7, 15 or 30 days and CelcomDigi’s 7, 14, 30 or 90, each from RM25 (16 Oct 2026). We do not convert ringgit to AED.
| Pass | Days | Data (FUP) | Price (RM) | about RM per day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hotlink Travel SIM | 7 | 40GB | 25 | 3.57 |
| Hotlink Travel SIM | 15 | 100GB | 35 | 2.33 |
| Hotlink Travel SIM | 30 | 400GB | 64 | 2.13 |
| CelcomDigi Tourist SIM | 7 | 100GB | 25 (18 on offer) | 3.57 |
| CelcomDigi Tourist SIM | 14 | 200GB | 35 | 2.50 |
| CelcomDigi Tourist SIM | 30 | 400GB | 60 | 2.00 |
| CelcomDigi Tourist SIM | 90 | 400GB | 90 | 1.00 |
Sources: Hotlink, Maxis newsroom (2 Jul 2026) and CelcomDigi (16 Oct 2026). The per-day column is our arithmetic over the full validity.
A 4-day stopover on the 7-day pass pays RM25 all the same: RM6.25 a day there, against RM3.57 over all 7.
Maxis writes its prices as “inclusive of 6% SST (applicable for non-Malaysian)”; its product page says “Price stated may be subject to Service Tax”. CelcomDigi states no tax, so we add none, and its RM18 is a “Limited-time Offer” with no end date. Hotlink’s FAQ lists cheaper top-up passes without saying why, so we quote only the starter prices.
Registration comes first. MCMC, the regulator, says every prepaid user registers “regardless of their nationality”, tourists included. A tourist staying under 3 months (counted from activation) gives the passport name, number and issuing country, plus a hotel or temporary address. Proof of stay can be a “hotel reservation/booking form”, and MCMC adds “Please bring along the original documents for registration”. CelcomDigi allows “a maximum of two (2) accounts” per foreign passport.
Hotlink sells the SIM at Maxis Centres, including KLIA 1 & 2, Langkawi and Penang airports. Only the RM35 pass is marked as an eSIM through the Hotlink app, with passport verification; we could not confirm it for RM25 and RM64. CelcomDigi sells at “all CelcomDigi Stores and authorized partners”, and its page names no airport counter and no eSIM.
CelcomDigi’s 7- and 14-day passes run at 18Mbps and the 30-day pass at uncapped speed. Past the FUP the speed falls to 512Kbps “until the pass expires”, then the line is “automatically deactivated” and does not take normal reloads. We did not collect Hotlink’s speed after the FUP.

e&, du and Virgin Mobile in Malaysia: a week and two
For a week in Malaysia your UAE line costs AED 100.00 on e& prepaid (4GB), du postpaid (10GB) or Virgin Mobile UAE (2GB), and Malaysia is on Virgin’s One Country list of 34 countries (15 Oct 2026), free on plans of 20GB and up.
| Pack | Line | Data · days | AED | about AED per day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| e& Weekly Data Pack | prepaid | 4GB · 7 days (until 10 Jan 2027, normally 2GB) | 100 | 14.3 |
| du roaming data bundle | postpaid | 10GB · 7 days | 100 | 14.3 |
| du roaming data bundle | prepaid | 10GB · 7 days | 200 | 28.6 |
| Virgin weekly pack | any line | 2GB · 7 days | 100 | 14.3 |
| Virgin One Country | plans of 20GB+ | your plan’s data · one month | free | 0 |
Sources: e& (15 Oct 2026); du postpaid and prepaid (15 Oct 2026); Virgin (15 Oct 2026). Per-day column: our arithmetic. Rules: e&, du, Virgin One Country.
For two weeks, du’s prepaid voice-and-data bundle runs 15 days for AED 200.00 with 10GB and 100 minutes. du’s voice-and-data bundles are “activated immediately at the time of purchase”, so buy it on the day you fly. Or add a second weekly pack. du runs up to 5 bundles at the same time, so buy the second one when week one ends; Virgin starts the next pack once the current one expires or runs out.
The clocks differ. e&’s pack starts “upon first eligible usage”, Virgin’s “once the first call is received or made”. du’s API and FAQ disagree on when postpaid data bundles activate, so buy shortly before you fly and check the du app. One Country “won’t auto renew”.
du also sells a travel eSIM for Malaysia: about AED 14.69 (US$4) for 1GB and 7 days, and about AED 100.99 (US$27.50) for unlimited 7 days (15 Oct 2026).
A week in Malaysia: roaming pack vs eSIM
4× cheaper than prepaid packs Free on Virgin Mobile 20 GB+ plans5.6 GB for 7 days (0.8 GB a day, social media and photos): the cheapest prepaid way to get it, and postpaid where it is lower.
On roaming your UAE number also takes calls and SMS; the eSIM is data only. Packs at the operator’s AED price, as listed on 15 Oct 2026; the eSIM at its AED price on 17 Oct, charged in AED by card. Work out your own trip.
One local SIM for Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia
Hotlink’s Travel SIM works in four countries, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia, on one purchase, and its passes run 7/15/30 days at RM25, RM35 and RM64 (16 Oct 2026). Our eSIMs are sold per country, so four countries mean four plans or the Asia regional plan.
Hotlink runs on
Maxis, and our Malaysia plan uses Maxis 5G. So the gap between a Malaysia SIM card and an eSIM is not the local network but the passport step, the calls and the country count. Hotlink includes free unlimited calls within Malaysia and a hotspot; CelcomDigi’s calls carry a fair-use limit of 100 minutes and 10 domestic SMS. A local SIM fits when you want calls inside Malaysia, carry your passport and booking, and move on to Singapore, Thailand or Indonesia; see the Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia guides.
| Our Malaysia plan | Price in AED |
|---|---|
| 1GB · 7 days | AED 12.99 |
| 10GB · 30 days | AED 36.99 |
| Unlimited data · 7 days (full speed up to 3GB a day, then 1 Mbps) | AED 96.99, about AED 13.86 a day |
Charged in AED by JET SHARING (USA). Your bank may add a foreign-transaction fee; see how to pay. All sizes: Malaysia eSIM plans.
Install before you fly; it connects when you land in Malaysia, and the days count from that first connection. There is no ID check on our eSIM, and a plan can be topped up. Our eSIMs for Malaysia are data-only: no calls, no SMS, no number. Keep your UAE SIM switched on for SMS; e& and Virgin Mobile don’t charge for SMS you receive abroad, and calls you receive are charged per minute. Setup: keep your UAE number. Our eSIMs are for use outside the UAE; they do not provide service in the UAE. If the eSIM has not connected to any network, you can get a refund within 30 days of purchase.
Check before you fly
What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in Malaysia?
Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.
The first is the line for mobile data. On iPhone it is Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data; on Android, the SIM manager. Pick the travel line there; your UAE line stays on for calls and SMS, with its mobile data off.
The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats Malaysia as roaming for it.
The third is the APN. On this plan it sets itself, so leave it alone; you don’t need to type one.
The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch airplane mode on and off, and let it find Maxis; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.
Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimgo.ae with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.
What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)
For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, AED 12.99. For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, AED 23.99. If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, AED 96.99, with 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.
I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If you need calls or SMS on your UAE number every day, roaming on your e&, du or Virgin Mobile line keeps them, and some packs include minutes (compare the packs). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.
FAQ
What do I need to buy a SIM in Malaysia?
Your original passport and a hotel booking. MCMC, Malaysia’s regulator, requires every prepaid user to register, tourists included, with the passport number, issuing country and a hotel or temporary address. It accepts a hotel reservation or booking form as proof of stay (MCMC, checked 16 Oct 2026).
Hotlink or CelcomDigi: which tourist SIM?
On 16 Oct 2026 both charge RM25 for 7 days. Hotlink gives 40GB and works in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia. CelcomDigi’s 7-day pass gives 100GB (RM18 on offer), and its line switches off when the pass expires. The 30-day passes are RM64 at Hotlink and RM60 at CelcomDigi.
Does a Malaysian tourist SIM work in Singapore?
Hotlink’s Travel SIM does: its page lists Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia (16 Oct 2026). CelcomDigi’s 14-day and longer passes add 3GB of roaming in 10 ASEAN countries; we did not collect the list, so check it for Singapore before you buy.
Is there an unlimited eSIM for Malaysia?
Yes. Our unlimited Malaysia plan runs at full speed up to 3GB a day, then drops to 1 Mbps. It is data-only, so keep your UAE SIM for calls and SMS.
Does my UAE roaming cover Malaysia?
Malaysia is in the roaming lists of e&, du and Virgin Mobile UAE, and on Virgin’s One Country list (15 Oct 2026). Without a pack your line won’t use mobile data there: all three block it, and only e& lets you unlock pay-as-you-go data for 24 hours by SMS.
