# Kenya SIM card from the UAE: Safaricom Jambo, roaming or an eSIM

**How to get mobile data in Kenya from the UAE:** for a short trip, a data eSIM installed before you fly, from AED 29.99 for 1GB and 7 days ([Kenya eSIM plans](/esim-kenya/)); on a du postpaid line, 5GB for 7 days at AED 70.00 (19 Oct 2026); for calls home and a longer stay, Safaricom's Jambo tourist bundle from KSh 2,000 with 12GB and 100 international minutes that include the UAE ([safaricom.co.ke](https://www.safaricom.co.ke/media-center-landing/frequently-asked-questions/jambo-tourist-bundles-faqs), 19 Oct 2026), registered to your passport.

We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here. eSIM Go is not affiliated with e&, du or Virgin Mobile UAE.

## Safaricom, Airtel or an eSIM: what fits a Kenya trip from the UAE?

A Kenya SIM card choice comes down to calls home, data volume and days. A week of maps and messaging fits a data eSIM or a UAE roaming pack. A longer stay with calls to the UAE, or 22GB of data or more, fits a Safaricom Jambo bundle on the local network, which needs a passport registration in Kenya.

Your e&, du or Virgin line won't use mobile data in Kenya unless you add a roaming pack. Of the three, only e& lets you unlock pay-as-you-go data for 24 hours by SMS.

## What do Safaricom's Jambo tourist bundles include?

Jambo bundles start at KSh 2,000: either 12GB with 400 local minutes and 100 international minutes, or 22GB of data only. KSh 3,000 buys 25GB with 1,000 minutes, and KSh 4,000 buys 39GB with 1,500 minutes. Every bundle with minutes carries 100 international minutes (Safaricom, 19 Oct 2026).

Safaricom sells them to tourists "during their first 90 days on the Safaricom network". Its instruction is "Dial \*444# and select the Global Connect option", and you pay with airtime or M-PESA. The bundle "can only be used while you are in Kenya". When the data runs out, "you will continue to enjoy unlimited WhatsApp until your bundle expires".

Safaricom's pages do not say how many days a bundle lasts, what the SIM costs or where to buy it. Ask at the counter before you pay. International minutes go only to listed countries, and the list includes "The United Arab Emirates".

Our arithmetic: KSh 2,000 for 22GB is about KSh 91 a GB, and KSh 4,000 for 39GB about KSh 103 a GB. The two KSh 2,000 bundles cost the same, so choosing minutes means giving up 10GB of data.

## What does a week in Kenya cost on e&, du or Virgin Mobile?

du lists the lowest weekly price for Kenya on a UAE line: AED 70.00 for 5GB over 7 days on postpaid. The other weekly packs cost AED 100.00 each and differ only in volume: 10GB on du postpaid, 4GB on e& prepaid (until 10 Jan 2027, normally 2GB) and 2GB on Virgin Mobile ([e&](https://www.eand.ae/eshop/addons/?subCategory=cat550028&lang=en&categoryDimension=cat550054), 19 Oct 2026; [du](https://www.du.ae/personal/mobile/roaming/postpaid/detail), 19 Oct 2026; [Virgin Mobile](https://www.virginmobile.ae/roaming/), 19 Oct 2026).

du's bundle list marks postpaid data bundles as active from purchase, while its FAQ says data bundles start during travel. Buy the pack shortly before you fly and check the activation note in the du app ([du roaming](/roaming/du/)). Virgin's free One Country pass does not help in Kenya: the country is not on Virgin's list of 34 (15 Oct 2026).

Our Kenya eSIM plans are data-only, with no unlimited option, and each has a price in AED. 1GB for 7 days is AED 29.99, 5GB for 30 days is AED 81.99, and 10GB for 30 days is AED 154.99, about AED 15.50 a GB (our arithmetic). Charged in AED by JET SHARING (USA). Your bank may add a foreign-transaction fee; see [how to pay](/how-to-pay/).

Install it before you fly; it connects when you land in Kenya, and its days count from then. If the data runs short, [a top-up](/help/top-up-esim/) goes on the same eSIM, with no new QR code. Calls and SMS stay on your UAE SIM ([keep your UAE number](/help/keep-your-uae-number/)). Keep that SIM switched on for SMS: e& and Virgin don't charge for SMS you receive abroad, and calls you receive are charged per minute. Our eSIM does not provide service in the UAE.

## What do you need to register a SIM in Kenya?

A Kenya SIM card is registered to your original passport. Kenya's Legal Notice 90 of 2025 tells an operator or agent to ask a foreigner for "a valid Passport or Foreign National Registration Certificate" before it registers a subscriber ([Kenya Law](https://new.kenyalaw.org/akn/ke/act/ln/2025/90/eng@2025-05-30), 19 Oct 2026).

The operator checks the document "with the existing relevant Government database" and "may require the subscriber to appear in person". Bring the passport itself, not a photo or a copy.

The same rule covers a line from Airtel Kenya. Airtel has no tourist plan that we found; its regular Smarta bundles include KSh 300 for 3.5GB over 7 days and KSh 1,000 for 22GB over 30 days ([Airtel Kenya](https://www.airtelkenya.com/ke/personal/smarta-bundles), 19 Oct 2026). Outside a bundle, data costs "Ksh. 0.4 per MB". Our arithmetic: that is KSh 400 for 1,000MB, while KSh 1,000 for 22GB is about KSh 45 a GB, half of Jambo's KSh 91. You need a registered Airtel line before you can buy a Smarta bundle.

## When is a Safaricom SIM the better buy?

A Safaricom Jambo Kenya SIM card is the better buy when you call the UAE, use M-PESA, or need more than 20GB in a month. Jambo's 100 international minutes can go to UAE numbers, and its data goes up to 39GB. Our Kenya-only plans stop at 10GB for 30 days and carry no minutes.

The eSIM wins on a short trip. You install it in the UAE and skip the counter and the passport step; its days count from your first connection in Kenya. For a safari across borders, the East Africa plan covers Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda on one eSIM. It goes up to 20GB for 30 days, or unlimited for 3 to 15 days at full speed up to 3GB a day, then 1 Mbps ([Africa regional plans](/esim-africa/)). For the other end of the continent, see the [South Africa SIM card guide](/sim-card/south-africa/).

## FAQ

### Can I call the UAE from a Kenya SIM?

Yes, on a Safaricom Jambo bundle with minutes. The KSh 2,000 12GB, KSh 3,000 25GB and KSh 4,000 39GB bundles each include 100 international minutes, and Safaricom lists "The United Arab Emirates" among the countries (Safaricom, 19 Oct 2026). Our eSIM is data-only and has no minutes.

### What do I need to register a SIM in Kenya?

Your original passport. Kenya's Legal Notice 90 of 2025 asks for "a valid Passport or Foreign National Registration Certificate" from a foreigner, and an operator "may require the subscriber to appear in person" (Kenya Law, 19 Oct 2026). Our eSIM has no ID check when you buy it.

### Is there an unlimited eSIM for Kenya?

Not on a Kenya-only plan: those run from 1GB for 7 days to 10GB for 30 days, data only. The East Africa plan for Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda has unlimited data for 3 to 15 days, at full speed up to 3GB a day, then 1 Mbps. For a month with more data, Safaricom's Jambo bundles go to 22GB, 25GB and 39GB (Safaricom, 19 Oct 2026).

### Does my UAE roaming cover Kenya?

Yes, with a roaming pack. The lowest week is du postpaid's 5GB at AED 70.00; e& prepaid, du postpaid and Virgin Mobile charge AED 100.00 a week for 4GB (until 10 Jan 2027), 10GB and 2GB (15 Oct 2026). Without a pack, mobile data stays blocked, apart from e&'s 24-hour pay-as-you-go unlock by SMS. Kenya is not on Virgin's One Country list.

### Can I use one eSIM for a Kenya and Tanzania safari?

Yes. The East Africa plan covers Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda on one eSIM, listed on the Africa plans page. It is data-only, so calls stay on your UAE SIM or a local line.
