# Can you use a hotspot with a travel eSIM? Sharing data abroad

Can I use hotspot with eSIM? Hotspot use counts against your plan's data, and on unlimited plans (full speed up to 3GB a day, then 1 Mbps) it counts towards that daily fair-use limit. We have no confirmed answer on whether every plan allows a hotspot, so email support@esimgo.ae first. A laptop on hotspot is the heavy case: we estimate **3.0GB** a day (15 Oct 2026).

## Does your plan allow a hotspot?

We cannot confirm it for every plan: our catalogue snapshot of 15 Oct 2026 has no hotspot or tethering field. Email support@esimgo.ae with the country and plan size, or write to us on WhatsApp from the [contact page](/contact/). Ask first, then buy.

If the plan allows it, tethered data comes out of the same allowance. Vodafone UK's [data calculator](https://www.vodafone.co.uk/mobile/data-calculator) says tethering "will use the same amount of mobile data as streaming the movie direct to your phone" (15 Oct 2026).

## Sharing on an unlimited plan: the daily limit

On most of our unlimited plans, full speed runs up to **3GB** a day, then 1 Mbps; in Thailand, the USA, Italy and Spain the limit is **5GB** (15 Oct 2026). Hotspot data counts toward that same limit. To see where you stand, [check your data usage](/help/check-data-usage/).

The limit belongs to the eSIM line, not to each device. At 0.8GB a day for social media and photos, one phone uses 0.8GB, two use 1.6GB, three use 2.4GB and four use **3.2GB** (our arithmetic). Four phones pass the 3GB line; once it is passed, the phone and everything tethered to it slow to 1 Mbps.

## How much a laptop on hotspot uses

Our profile for working on a laptop is **3.0GB** a day, about 4 hours of standard-definition video at Vodafone UK's rate of 1GB per 1 hour 20 minutes. It is a conservative estimate, not a measurement (our profiles, 15 Oct 2026).

| Days | Laptop only (3.0GB a day) | Laptop plus one phone (3.8GB a day) |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 9GB | 11.4GB |
| 7 | 21GB | 26.6GB |
| 14 | 42GB | 53.2GB |
| 30 | 90GB | 114GB |

Our arithmetic. A 20GB plan lasts 6.7 days of laptop work (20 ÷ 3.0). On a 3GB-a-day unlimited plan, the laptop alone sits at the limit and a phone on top passes it; the 5GB countries leave room. Size the rest in [how much data do I need](/how-much-data-do-i-need/) and the [unlimited eSIM](/esim-unlimited/) guide.

## One eSIM shared or one eSIM each

Sharing data or buying one eSIM each comes down to the daily total, and so does eSIM vs pocket WiFi. Share one eSIM when the devices do light work and the daily total stays under the limit; buy an eSIM per phone when the total passes it, or when support has not confirmed hotspot for your plan.

Take three phones for 7 days at 0.8GB a day. A pocket WiFi needs **16.8GB** for the group (3 × 0.8 × 7); three eSIMs need **5.6GB** each. The total is the same (our arithmetic); the router is an extra device to charge and carry. We quote no router prices; the [Philippines guide](/sim-card/philippines/) has the family case. On Umrah, our Saudi Arabia unlimited plans have the 3GB limit, so four phones on social media pass it on one shared eSIM; a second eSIM splits the load. See [Umrah roaming](/roaming/umrah-hajj/).

## FAQ

### Can I use hotspot with eSIM?

Hotspot use counts against your plan's data. We have no confirmed answer on whether every plan allows it, so email support@esimgo.ae before you rely on it.

### Does hotspot use my fair-use limit faster?

Yes. On most of our unlimited plans, hotspot data counts toward the same limit: full speed up to 3GB a day, then 1 Mbps. In Thailand, the USA, Italy and Spain the limit is 5GB a day.

### Pocket WiFi or eSIM: which is better for a family trip?

For three phones over 7 days, a pocket WiFi needs 16.8GB and three eSIMs need 5.6GB each (our arithmetic). An eSIM adds no device to charge, and a router suits several phones on one connection. We quote no router prices.

### How much data does a laptop use on hotspot?

We estimate 3.0GB a day for working on a laptop, about 21GB over 7 days (our estimate, not a measurement). A 20GB plan lasts about 6.7 days of laptop work.
