# eSIM vs physical SIM for travel from the UAE: which one for your trip

In the eSIM vs physical SIM choice, a travel eSIM is bought online with no ID check and leaves your UAE SIM in the phone. A local physical SIM is bought at the destination, with a passport at the counters we checked, and brings its own minutes. Our single-country eSIMs for India, Pakistan, Nepal, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia and Oman are data-only (15 Oct 2026). New to eSIMs? Start with [what an eSIM is](/what-is-an-esim/).

We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here. eSIM Go is not affiliated with e&, du or Virgin Mobile UAE.

## eSIM or a local SIM for your trip: the short answer

Take a travel eSIM if you mainly need data for maps and messaging. Take a local SIM if you need local minutes: our eSIMs for those six countries carry none.

| Snapshot 15 Oct 2026 | Our travel eSIM | Local SIM at the destination |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase | Online, before you fly | At an airport or operator store (Ooredoo Oman: "any store in airports") |
| Documents | No ID or KYC check | Passport: Ooredoo "an original passport", Omantel "a valid passport" |
| Phone slot | A second line; UAE SIM stays in | A tray (none on iPhone 17, 17e, Air); Omantel also sells a tourist eSIM |
| Number and calls | Data only for those six countries | Own line: Ooredoo Tourist 5 has **50** local and **50** international minutes |
| Days start | First connection abroad | Omantel "30 days from SIM activation" |

## Buying: an airport counter and ID vs a QR code at home

You buy a travel eSIM on your phone, scan its QR code on home Wi-Fi and fly; we run no ID or KYC check (15 Oct 2026). Steps: [install guide](/how-to-install-esim/). A local SIM is sold at a counter, and that country sets the rules.

The Philippines keeps every SIM "in a deactivated state" until its owner registers; a foreign tourist shows a passport, proof of address in the Philippines and a return ticket, and the SIM is valid for **30 days** (Republic Act 11934, signed 10 Oct 2022). Filipinos going home register a new SIM with ID too: see the [Philippines SIM card guide](/sim-card/philippines/).

In Pakistan, a new SIM needs a CNIC and fingerprints at an authorised outlet (PTA; more in the [Pakistan SIM card guide](/sim-card/pakistan/)); Zong asks foreigners for a passport and visa. In Nepal, Ncell's tourist plans are "only for Non-Nepalese citizens" (15 Oct 2026).

Queue time is the other cost. One r/Umrah poster (24 Jul 2026) wrote: "Bought Mobily ESIM in Madinah airport. Was told I'll get a mail in 10 mins, but didn't for hours." That is one person's experience, with a local eSIM. A travel eSIM moves that step to your sofa: it connects when you land.

If the eSIM has not connected to any network, you can get a refund within 30 days of purchase. Check your model first: [eSIM-compatible phones](/esim-compatible-phones/).

## Your phone: the UAE SIM stays in its slot

A travel eSIM is a second line, so your e&, du or Virgin Mobile SIM stays put. A local plastic SIM needs a free tray, and the iPhone 17, 17e and Air are "not compatible with physical SIM cards" (Apple UAE, 15 Oct 2026). On those phones a local line must be an eSIM; Omantel, for one, sells its tourist pack as a "Tourist eSIM" (omantel.om, 15 Oct 2026).

On a one-tray phone such as the iPhone 16 ("Dual SIM (nano-SIM and eSIM)"), you swap SIM cards if your UAE line is plastic: the local card replaces it, and your UAE SMS has nowhere to arrive.

Keep your UAE SIM switched on for SMS; e& and Virgin don't charge for SMS you receive abroad; calls you receive are charged per minute. We found no du price for SMS you receive abroad, so check with du. We cannot promise that bank SMS codes reach a number abroad, and we hold no data to rank either type on security. Dual SIM settings: [keep your UAE number](/help/keep-your-uae-number/).

## Number and calls: a local SIM has one, a data eSIM doesn't

A tourist SIM comes with its own line and minutes. Ooredoo's Tourist 5 gives **8GB**, **50** local and **50** international minutes and **50** SMS for **10 days**; Omantel's Tourist Explore gives **50** minutes for **14 days** (15 Oct 2026). Our eSIMs for the six countries above are data-only: no calls, no SMS, no number. Some UK and USA plans include minutes.

e& charges AED **0.808** a minute for calls you receive in the GCC and AED **4.25** elsewhere (15 Oct 2026). For mostly calls, a local SIM or an operator pack beats a data-only travel SIM; see the [roaming guide](/roaming/).

## Price and when the days start

A travel eSIM's days start at your first connection abroad, not at purchase or install. You buy an Oman plan on 20 Oct and land on 2 Nov: the days count from 2 Nov.

A local SIM starts at the counter. Omantel's tourist SIM is "valid for 30 days from SIM activation" while its pack runs **14 days**, and Ooredoo's line is "valid for 30 days only" (15 Oct 2026).

In Oman, Ooredoo's Tourist 5 costs **OMR 5** + 5% VAT for 8GB over 10 days, and Omantel's Tourist Explore costs **OMR 5**, VAT included, for 8GB over 14 days ([Ooredoo](https://www.ooredoo.om/en/personal/mobile/tourist-pack), [Omantel](https://www.omantel.om/en/personal/mobile-prepaid#tourist-packs), 15 Oct 2026). Both include minutes; we do not convert Omani rials to AED.

Our Oman plans cost AED 48.99 for 5GB over 30 days, data only. Charged in AED by JET SHARING (USA). Your bank may add a foreign-transaction fee; see [how to pay](/how-to-pay/). Our Oman unlimited plans run at full speed up to **3GB a day**, then 1 Mbps.

Weighing the pros and cons, a local SIM is the better pick when you need local minutes or your phone has no eSIM. See the [Oman SIM card guide](/sim-card/oman/).

## FAQ

### Is it better to get an eSIM or a physical SIM for travel?

For mobile data, a travel eSIM: no ID check, and your UAE SIM stays in the phone. For local minutes, a local SIM: Ooredoo's Tourist 5 in Oman includes 50 local and 50 international minutes (15 Oct 2026).

### What happens to my eSIM if I lose my phone?

We have no verified rule for a lost phone, so contact our support first. Don't delete the travel eSIM before your trip ends; turn the line off instead, and contact support before you reinstall or move it.

### Can I use a physical SIM and an eSIM at the same time?

Yes, on phones with both a SIM tray and eSIM. The iPhone 16 lists "Dual SIM (nano-SIM and eSIM)", and Google says a Pixel 3a or later can use "one physical SIM card and one eSIM". The iPhone 17, 17e and Air take no physical SIM (Apple UAE, 15 Oct 2026).

### Does a local SIM give me a phone number abroad?

A local tourist SIM comes with its own line: Ooredoo's Tourist 5 includes 50 local and 50 international minutes and 50 SMS (15 Oct 2026). That line is separate from your UAE number. Our single-country eSIMs for India, Pakistan, Nepal, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia and Oman are data-only, with no number.
